The Electronics Technician works within a team of technicians carrying out comprehensive preventative and corrective maintenance, fault diagnosis, recovery and repair service to the Canada Line Automatic Train Control systems and Rail Communication systems & associated equipment including but not limited to Data Communication and Computer Network, SCADA, Fiber Optic Transmission, Public Address, Emergency Telephone systems, Radio systems, CCTV, variable messaging signs and Public Information Display, Security systems, Fire Detection Alarm and Intrusion Detection systems insuring that these systems are operating at a high standard of safety and reliability.
The Electronics Technician maintains the systems assets and related support equipment in accordance with procedures, engineering drawings and specifications, and is proficient in the operation and maintenance of shop equipment and instruments. The Electronics Technician also provides first line maintenance response to help maintain a high quality, safe and efficient transit service; is involved in the installation, testing and commissioning of asset modifications or new assets implementation. Inspects and approve work undertaken by contractors or sub-system suppliers. Recommends and implement measures to improve asset performance.
The successful candidate will be part of the BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU).
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Follow written procedures, engineering drawings and instructions to execute preventative maintenance, modification and corrective maintenance on Automatic Train control and Rail communication systems and related support equipment as required or directed by the Maintenance Supervisor or the Electronics Team Leader.
- Diagnose the cause of failures to equipment and assets and rectify them in an efficient manner following standard procedures and safety instructions; return the service as efficiently as possible.
- Complete checklists, tracking sheets and all necessary documentation related to assets maintenance relating to certifying Canada Line systems as serviceable.
- Perform first line response to Automatic Train Control and electronic systems failures.
- Respond to all requests from the Control Room relating to all systems under responsibility of the electronics department.
- Perform planned preventative maintenance following written procedures, keep records of the results and report all defects found.
- Prioritize work within a shift to minimize unavailability and ensure that assigned work is completed in a timely manner.
- Ensure that clear and concise records are maintained for failures on a daily basis, including actions taken and preventative maintenance actions.
- Recommend and implement measures to improve asset performance and reduce maintenance costs and/or response time.
- Responsible for ensuring working areas, storage areas and duty vehicles are kept in a clean and safe state and for completing housekeeping, vehicle usage and other related checklists.
- Ensures that any equipment or materials used are replenished at the earliest opportunity.
- Assist with commissioning of new and existing Electronics systems and support systems ensuring high reliability and safety of equipment.
- Step up and assume duties of the Team Leader’s position in the absence of the Team Leader
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2-year Post secondary technical degree in electronics or communications disciplines.
- Minimum 4 years experience in maintaining electronic or communications equipment or similar systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and orally. Must be able to communicate clearly and receive dispatches by radio.
- A current BC Class 5 driver’s license.
- Ability to decide on the correct course of action in the event of an asset failure or during routine activities, without further reference to the Electronics Team Leader or Maintenance Supervisor.
- Ability to recognize when it is necessary to request advice or assistance.
- Required to make rapid decisions when equipment or assets are in an unsafe or failed condition and apply appropriate and immediate restrictions on their use.
- Ability to prioritize workload during a shift such that the effect of asset and equipment failures is minimized, scheduled work is completed on time, and accurate records are maintained.
- Strong experience with computer equipment, networking diagnostic software and IT tools.
- Ability to work off site, travel to stations, work in elevated rail guideway and tunnel, climb ladders, work from height, operate a man-lift and access confined space.
- The role requires shift work for continuous operation based on a seven day week, 24 hour per week, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to promote and maintain good working relationships with the Control Room and respond in a prompt manner; ensure that communication is maintained throughout a failure scenario so that Control Room staff can make informed decisions on how to best manage the service around the failure.

- Develop and maintain effective liaison with the Performance Analyst ensuring that data and reports are supplied in a timely manner, and assisting with the analysis of the performance of assets.
- Required to utilize a range of equipment such as computer diagnostic equipment, scopes, spectrum analyzer & other electronic test equipment and range of hand and power tools such as drill, impact drive, saw and crimping tools.
- Advance knowledge with computer equipment and diagnostic software packages and networking.
A combination of experience and education may also be considered.
