We are seeking an Intermediate Biologist to join our team based in Toronto, Ontario.  The successful candidate will report to the Biology/Ecology Group Manager.   

The Biological Services Group is part of the Toronto IACE team within the Central Canada Division of E&G. As a member of the growing and diversifying GIS and Biological Services Group, the Intermediate Ecologist, together with the Group Manager and other biologists, will be responsible for the execution of a variety of Fish and Wildlife (including Species at Risk) related projects and maintaining project objectives and schedules.  This work could involve field visits to remote sites.

Your role within the team:

  • Perform background researches and reviews of aerial photographs, natural features, wildlife atlases, and other supporting documents such as site plans and architectural drawings;
  • Assist with planning, designing and implementation of project field studies;
  • Conduct biological field investigations including botanical inventories, wildlife surveys, breeding bird surveys, targeted Species at Risk surveys, and/or wetland delineations based on established sampling protocols;
  • Perform a variety of field and office tasks requiring scientific research, field studies, data recording, entry and management, analysis, and reporting;
  • Utilize technical writing skills to prepare environmental letters and reports;
  • Consult with regulatory agencies for the request of background information, review of terms of references, and review of environmental features/studies;
  • Assist with the acquisition of environmental permits and/or approvals;
  • Conduct site inspections and monitoring of natural environment features, Species at Risk and habitats, and/or erosion and sediment control measures;
  • Provide support to project leads in scheduling fieldwork, equipment maintenance and regular communication; and
  • Liaise with other technical specialists including environmental scientists, engineers, GIS/CADD technologists and other disciplines.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma, Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Geography or related field;
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with environmental consulting and/or agency work experience considered an asset;
  • Experience in the basic identification of Ontario flora and fauna with a willingness to learn and grow;
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, policies and guidelines regulated by agencies including MNRF, MOECP and Conservation Authorities;
  • Familiar with environmental management, planning and permitting processes in Ontario;
  • MNRF certification in Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario and Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control are considered assets;
  • Organized with ability to undertake multiple projects within time constraints and within budget limitations;
  • Good written and verbal communications skills; and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel, sometimes to remote locations.
