The Geohazards and Geomorphology team is made up of dedicated specialists that use expert knowledge, principles and practice in geohazards, earth surface processes, and landforms to assist clients in achieving economic, environmental and safety goals. We do this by recognizing and minimizing the impact of terrain constraints, mitigating hazards, reducing risk, and providing engineered solutions.
Our team gathers professionals with specific background and experience in slope hazards, erosion processes, water crossings, hydraulics, terrain mapping, hazard and risk mapping (qualitative and quantitative), air photo and satellite image analysis/ interpretation, GIS analysis, and surface water/ debris flow modeling. Our current clients include pipeline, rail, mining, and forest companies, as well as municipal, provincial and federal governments, and First Nations groups.
We are fully supported by geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, biologists and environmental specialists recognized locally and around the world for their expertise.
The Geohazards and Geomorphology team is expanding and is currently seeking an Intermediate level Geohazard Specialist to join our dynamic group of scientist and engineers. The person in this position will report to the Manager of Geohazards and Geomorphology and will be responsible for supporting the execution of geohazard projects across our western Canadian offices. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge by working with senior experienced professionals, in both the office and in the field.
Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
Four years or more of relevant experience in applied geomorphology, ideally related to the assessment of geohazards; Demonstrated skill at air photo/satellite image interpretation and mapping; Excellent working knowledge of ArcGIS; Demonstrated experience in understanding terrain models and specialized training in at least one aspect of Geomorphology, Engineering Geology or similar; Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to produce reports and proposals; Ability to work on multiple projects and meet established deadlines; Effective interpersonal skills, a strong client-service focus and the ability to work in a team environment; Registered (or qualified to register) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists in Alberta; and Valid driver’s licence with a clean driving abstract.
Desirable Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
M.Sc. degree in a field complimentary to current staff expertise; Proficient at statistical and analytical methods of analysis with emphasis on quantitative methods in geomorphology; Skills in slope hazard assessment, flood hazard assessment and/or fluvial geomorphology; Experience with site investigation/borehole logging; Expertise using specialized equipment and/or software (LiDAR, geophysical tools, softcopy mapping software, survey equipment, geological or geotechnical modelling software, etc.) and willingness to take responsibility for those skills, including training other staff to use them; and, Strong business development skills.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Report preparation:
Design, collect and interpret data from soil, sediment, and bedrock surveys;
Map surficial geology, geomorphology, and associated geohazards;
Design and conduct field studies. Fieldwork involves periods of time away from home, which may include long hours, working in remote locations and possibly rustic conditions;
Study and discuss the effects of landsliding, erosion, sedimentation and neo-tectonic activity on the landscape;
Record and interpret geological and geomorphological information from maps, reports, stratigraphic logs, air photographs, satellite imagery, geological surveys and other sources;
Participate in the study and mitigation of hazards including floods and landslides;
Prepare maps, diagrams, cross-sections and reports from field and office studies; and
Ensure technical quality of work, including review of the work of others.
Act as the lead resource/project manager for a variety of projects and clients;Prepare and review proposals; Support the development of the Environment & Geoscience business by developing relationships with existing and future clients, attending meetings, and supporting BD initiatives; and; Provide guidance, training and direction to junior staff.
