Role Summary and Purpose:

At SNC Lavalin Atkins, data is at the heart of how we solve our client's most complex and critical challenges. We’re streamlining passenger experiences by developing biometric airport security solutions. And we’re developing cutting edge machine learning and AI tools to ensure large and complex projects are delivered on time and budget. The Data Intelligence Practice helps our clients organise, analyse and visualise their data to create actionable insight from static and real-time sources using industry leading tools and techniques. Our markets are Aerospace, Defence, Security, Government & Infrastructure (Energy, Water, Transport).

As a Lead Data Scientist in our Data Intelligence Practice you will be able to apply cutting edge data analytics techniques to solve real-world problems. You will be able to see clearly how the work you do impacts society and you will have access to a wealth of un-tapped historic and real-time data. You will be responsible for leading and growing a team of data scientists, nurturing an industry leading capability and ensuring an excellent quality of delivery across a diverse mix of client engagements.

Responsibilities:

This is a key role in a rapidly developing part of our business and you will:

  • Engage directly with clients and domain experts to understand their challenges and propose data science solutions.
  • Use data analysis techniques to prove hypothesis by building statistical models using a range of tools including Python, Spark and R.
  • Set up best practice data science capabilities and processes including ML/Ops and Model Lifecycle Management.
  • Use cutting edge visualisation techniques to enable our Clients to better explore the patterns and trends hidden within their data.
  • Evaluate and apply machine learning (including deep learning) algorithms on data to create insights. 
  • Work collaboratively with data engineers and software engineers to develop prototypes and deployable solutions.
  • Support the data science team to achieve their potential through active technical leadership and coaching.

What you can bring:

The successful candidate is likely to have the following attributes:

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and lead others, and to work with minimal direction, with the proven ability to coordinate complex activities​.
  • Experience in developing and delivering presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • A problem-solving mindset and the ability to make conceptual links between real word problems and data analytics solutions.​
  • Strong grasp of numbers, statistics, mathematical concepts, and algorithms, degree qualified in a related subject.
  • Experience of implementing Model Cycle Management/ML-Ops for multiple experiments.
  • Experience of managing/mentoring team of data scientists.
  • Knowledge of data structures, relational data, and big data platforms.
  • Experience of handling unstructured data such as images, point cloud, text etc.
  • Understanding of Machine Learning, e.g.: linear/logistic regression, random forest, SVM, neural networks, etc., with demonstrable experience in their application to real-word problems.
  • Experience with NLP and linguistic approaches for retrieval, interpretation, and pushing of insight from scientific literature.
  • Proficiency with machine and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras.
  • Experience with techniques to retrieve actionable feature insight from deep neural networks.
  • Experience with developing and provisioning sustainable solutions within cloud-based ecosystems (e.g. Microsoft Azure, AWS).
