Shaping the future of the water market

The Market Director is responsible for setting our longer term strategic direction in the water sector and delivering our growth aspirations and annual targets. The Market Director will lead a client facing team and report directly to our Group MD Infrastructure as part of the Atkins Infrastructure leadership team

The role will require a mix of foresight to develop long-term strategies that deliver both revenue and margin growth, as well as strong relationship skills to develop deep client understanding. Our market directors are also responsible for creating a network and culture within Atkins that understands the market and client needs, as well as winning work through cross selling across the wider Atkins group. Developing relationships with key clients including Thames Water, Scottish Water, United Utilities, Severn Trent, Anglian Water and the Environment Agency is a key remit of the role.

Infrastructure in Atkins is an organisation of 3,000 people with circa £300m annual turnover, delivering a wide portfolio of projects ranging from strategic advice through to large EPC schemes to our targeted markets sectors. Our water market, with annual turnover of around £80m predominantly covers the UK water sector, with the other sectors being International water where we export our water expertise and the UK Water Agencies sector including the EA.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Development and Implementation of a long-term market strategy that positions Atkins as the leading provider of professional services in the UK and allows us to shape the future of the water sector
  • Drive growth in market share, identifying and engaging with new target clients, developing brand and reputation, stimulating the market with insights, thought leadership and innovation.
  • Development of key senior stakeholder relationships by getting close to the heart of our clients, building on existing relationships and creating new ones to maximise the opportunities for Atkins and support the re-shaping of the market. Expanding Atkins client base will be key.
  • Delivery of the financial and operational performance in line with the 5-year plan and annual P&L targets through the successful delivery of our portfolio of projects.
  • Supporting Atkins worldwide growth in the water sector by taking a leading role and seeking opportunities to win work and grow international capability.
  • Be an ambassador for the business; attending and speaking at relevant industry events, developing alliances and partnerships and generally leveraging opportunities to build greater awareness of Atkins and improve our standing and reputation.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrable C suite client and stakeholder management skills, customer focused.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading an organisation from setting a clear vision and strategy through to the delivery of business goals and targets
  • Whilst experience and knowledge of the UK water market is a distinct advantage, it is not an absolute requirement for the role.
  • A recognised and well-networked profile in the UK water market also an advantage.
  • A track record for driving health & safety culture and performance.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and in writing with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Strong influencing skills negotiating skills that have led to demonstrable results.
  • A supportive and encouraging approach to identifying and nurturing talent.
  • Highly mobile and available to travel across the UK and work away from home, including periods overseas on assignments.
  • Degree level or equivalent professional qualifications.
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
