Transportation in AtkinsRéalis is an organization of 2,700 people, delivering a wide portfolio of projects. The strategic rail market is the largest market. There is significant opportunity for further growth through key projects like High-Speed Rail, Central Rail Systems Alliance, Crewe Hub, East West Rail, Network Rail Regions and unlocking opportunities with the creation of Great British Railways.

Role:

  • The open position is for an Operational Safety Team Leader to lead a newly formed Operational Safety Team within the Safety Engineering and Independent Verification Practice, part of the wider Rail Operations and Asset Management Practice.
  • The Safety Engineering and Independent Verification Practice provides robust and reliable safety management and certification services and is extending its reach to support clients with their operational safety needs.  
  • This role is required to lead and shape the team that is being grown to deliver these new services.
  • An ambitious and tenacious Operational Safety Team Leader will lead a team of Operational Safety Specialists in the delivery of strategic safety management activities to Passenger Train and Freight Operating Companies (TOCS & FOCs) and Light Rail Operators and Infrastructure Managers.
  • The role will also focus on providing strategic support to the Practice Manager and the Senior Team within the practice, whilst helping to drive future growth opportunities.
  • This is an ideal opportunity for individuals to develop an existing career path, in an organization that will provide wide-ranging opportunities across all rail systems in a leadership role.
  • This opportunity gives a diligent Operational Safety Team Leader an opportunity to undertake and contribute to a wide variety of projects, covering a diverse range of operational safety areas, supporting an impressive spectrum of clients.
  • You will be part of a growing team with the aim to strengthen its strategic consultancy work, and to provide step changes in the approach to how operational safety related matters are managed in the railway industry.
  • This role is to be located along side our teams either in Derby, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow or London, though other locations will also be considered.
  • The team works predominantly in the UK rail domain with some work internationally.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and inspire the Operational Safety Team to ensure delivery of projects and client satisfaction.
  • Be a leading figure in client organizations to support decision making processes.
  • Business and project management leader within the Practice to grow revenue.
  • Responsibility for monitoring market trends and making our business respond to these trends.
  • Support the Practice Manager to implement strategies and processes.
  • Responsibility for ensuring growth through client management.
  • Business Development, bid management and portfolio prioritization.

Qualities / Qualifications:

  • Considerable years’ of experience is required in the railway environment.
  • Proven experience of people management.
  • Significant experience in a safety or risk management role.
  • Proven experience of railway operations and/or working with railway operators.
  • Proven experience of practical application and understanding of safety management systems, rail industry standards and legislation.
  • Proven experience of working face to face with clients/customers.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, self-motivated and able to set and achieve demanding targets and objectives, and report upon them.
  • Qualifications in relevant safety areas is preferred e.g., NEBOSH, or working towards.
  • Chartership of a recognised Professional Body is preferred or working towards.
