Principal Civil / Structural Engineer

As a result of continued growth in the Atkins Rutherford House, Cumbria (Whitehaven) Nuclear office, we are looking to recruit experienced Principal civil/structural engineers with a proven track record in the production of engineering/technical deliverables on multi-discipline design. Experience in the Nuclear Industry would be preferable, but is not essential.

The successful candidate shall be required to lead technical projects with a team of engineers involved in civil/structural engineering design and assessment. They will collaborate with other lead engineers on securing future opportunities to develop and expand the team. The candidate will also be supporting the development and career progress of more junior engineers in the team.

Responsibilities
• Lead engineer delivering programmed work.
• Project definition and preparation of fee proposals.
• Supporting bidding works.
• Leading engineers undertaking detailed design solutions in accordance with the relevant British Standards/International codes.
• Production and approval of technical specifications.
• Support the development and career progress of younger engineers.
• Liaison with clients to ensure technical deliverables are delivered on time to the client requirements.
• Approval of the detailed design deliverables and engineering drawings.
• Management of workload and resources, including Line Management duty.
• Liaise with Project Managers for deliver projects.
• Undertake annual appraisal for younger engineers.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree qualified, a Chartered civil or structural engineer.
• A good level of previous engineering design experience is essential. This should include analysis of structures and detail design of elements in all major materials.
• Skilled at collaborative working, have good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively.
• Customer focused and a high level of relationship management skills.
• Proven technical capability for delivering Civil and Structural engineering projects.
• A good track record in key client management.
• Work to meet targets, and have a high level of commercial awareness and the ability to work within budget and programme.
• Experience of supervising teams of professional staff including developing/mentoring junior engineers.
• Candidates should have a strong technical background, including first principles analysis and knowledge and use of relevant UK and international codes and standards.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build and develop relationships internally and externally
• Design of concrete, steel and masonry structures using British codes and knowledge of European and US codes is desirable.
• Based in the Cumbria (Whitehaven) office.

Desirable
• A high level of relevant experience as a Principal Civil and Structural Engineer.
• Experience of highly regulated UK industries would be beneficial plus an understanding of relevant legislative standards.
• Design and analysis experience of structures under dynamic loading e.g. seismic, impact, blast is desirable.
• Working in multi-disciplinary teams on high value construction projects.
• Very good standard of written English and the ability to write clear technical reports.
• Innovative and open to ideas.
• Flexible in approach, willing to travel to work on client sites.
• Nuclear background.

Additional Information

•Travel to other company sites may be necessary.There will be opportunities for international travel and applicants with a desire for non-UK based assignments will be welcomed.
