Our planning team in the south west works alongside teams across the Country on a variety of major infrastructure and development projects. We require an experienced Principal Planner to be located in either our Bristol or Exeter office. Should the preference be for a Bristol based role, you would be required spend at least a day a week working in our Exeter office to develop and maintain a working relationship with the team there.

The appointed candidate will join a progressive team of planners, environmentalist and engineers which has established links with our energy, transport, design businesses. Our work involves infrastructure and development projects in most sectors, in particular : highways; power generation and rail; together with water development projects flood risk alleviation schemes, urban and commercial development and waste. Our client base includes major private and public sector developers and operators on some of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects in the UK

The position requires a Chartered Planner, combining an excellent track record in planning with particular experience in providing advice to our growing markets in the development, transportation, energy and water sectors. Experience in the minerals or waste sectors would be an advantage. In addition, the successful candidate will be commercially aware and familiar with managing budgets as part of project delivery.

Responsibilities

• Preparation of planning applications and supporting documents
• Provision of planning advice to external and internal clients
• Identification, development and pursuit of new business and marketing opportunities in a range of sectors
• Costing and managing commercial element of projects
• Preparation of tender responses
• Management, including financial management, of projects
• Mentoring of junior staff

Requirements

• A relevant planning degree
• Chartered membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute
• Relevant post qualification experience in a planning role
• A sound, in-depth knowledge of planning law and procedures, including the changing planning system at national and local levels
• Experience in the management and delivery of multi-disciplinary planning projects
• Proven ability to manage budgets
• Capability to work alongside and co-ordinate a range of technical specialists providing input into planning submissions and EIAs
• Consultancy experience is an advantage, as is a need to demonstrate commercial expertise.

The successful applicant must be flexible and self-motivated and be expected to demonstrate the following:

 
• Good communication skills, with ability to draft reports to a high standard
• Ability to work under pressure, and have proven success in meeting tight deadlines
• Confident team worker, but able to work with limited supervision
• Commercial awareness and business development skills.
