Job Summary:

The Professional Head will provide technical leadership to staff within the track engineering  discipline and provide technical assurance.  The Professional Head will take senior roles on projects and the over-arching objectives will be to:

(i)    Raise the profile of Atkins’s technical capabilities in their discipline;
(ii)    Ensure consistency and best practice across teams to maintain competitive/commercial advantage;
(iii)    Facilitate the technical development of technical staff;
(iv)    Encourage innovation and cross-business cooperation;
(v)    Support the Division’s technical assurance requirements.

The Professional Head of Track will take senior roles on our projects and carry out the generic Professional Head of Discipline responsibilities with specific regard to capturing, creating and integrating a better quality of data across the lifecycle of an asset.  This will include maintaining and/or developing capability in the following core areas:

Track Design, including:

  • Detailed knowledge of Plain Line and Switch & Crossing design for both UK and overseas projects where required
  • Detailed knowledge of the track system approach to design with proven design integration experience in the modern digital environment 
  • A working knowledge of software packages including but not limited to Bentley Rail Track, Clear Route 2 and Microstation working in a 3D digital environment.
  • A working knowledge of the various data capture methods available for track design delivery, including but not limited to LiDAR capture of existing asset geometry and use of point cloud data.

Track Asset Management, including:

  • Knowledge and experience of the track infrastructure component parts. Understanding of the rate of deterioration of track components relative to their use and extensive design and construction experience to influence the development of quality track designs. 
  • Knowledge of intelligent infrastructure developments being used for design and maintenance.   
  • Knowledge of interpretative methods of Ground Penetrating Radar for formation design, interpretation of track quality data to enable the correct track specification to be developed.   

Track Consultancy, including:

  • Experience of the various stages of track design from feasibility studies through to construction support working with the contractors.
  • Experience of working for both client and contractor in the field of track

Track Research & Development and Interface with Universities 

  • Close links to Universities and Colleges in the field of Track Infrastructure design and construction, with a passion for raising the profile of Atkins/SNCL in the Rail industry.
  • Active member of the PWI and contributor to PWI publications and Journals.   

It is also expected that the Professional Head for Track keeps a close working relationship with the other countries where Atkins have track skills including but not limited to India, North America and the Middle East.

It is essential that the PHOD(Track) creates the culture for learning and promotion of best practice continuously learning for past projects and continues to lead the development of the discipline specific online training academy within Atkins.
