Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join Atkins in Orlando, Florida as a Project Engineer- Toll Road Facilities supporting Atkins’ Tolling Technology group.  This position will provide career growth opportunities through support for the planning, design and implementation of toll road, and tolled express / managed lanes infrastructure projects.
 
The ideal candidate will have some exposure to roadway and facilities infrastructure, toll collection / electronic payment systems and subsystems, video systems, or traffic management; information and communication technologies, including fiber-optic, and/or toll operations.  A broad base of skills, and capability in engineering and communicating is desired, as well as the willingness to be a team player.
 
Education and Experience: 
  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering.
  • This level may be achieved by Engineers with 2 years' experience since B.S. or 1 year since M.S. The typical incumbent has 3 to 5 years' experience since Bachelor's degree.
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a Toll-related subject such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science / Information Technology, Transportation Planning.
 
Professional Registrations:
  • E.I. or EIT is highly desirable.
     


Major Function/Role:
  • Project Engineer as part of Atkins’ Orlando, FL transportation team that supports the Tolling Services practice.  Atkins’ Tolling Services practice supports both public and private clients in the program management, planning, design, procurement and implementation of infrastructure, facilities, systems / technologies and business processes for the operation and collection of revenue for tolled roads (including tolled express lane systems and toll facilities), bridges and tunnels.
  • Under supervision, applies technical professional proficiency to the investigation of engineering problems, the coordination of project activities, and the preparation of preliminary reports, plans and documents.
  • Performs the basic project functions of production, planning, project coordination and support.
 
 
Job Duties:
  • Designs and develops plans and drawings, research, specifications, reports, which may include the development of preliminary and/or final documents.
  • Organizes and conducts engineering investigations and planning work which have a well-defined scope. Outlines and prepares relatively straightforward reports of sections of more complex reports, working under the periodic review of a more experienced professional.
  • Assists with preparation of concept reports, including coordination with internal client design groups in preparation of the reports, to be used for scoping and budgeting projects.
  • Participates in the preparation of procurement documents for the solicitation of contractors to construct and deliver the tolled facilities infrastructure; or systems integration contractors to develop and deliver the technology systems required to support tolling operations.
  • May travel to project sites to support occasional field work with technical staff, to collect site specific data as projects require, inspect toll systems, or test toll systems.
  • Researches feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory agency specifications.
  • Contributes to the development of specifications and permit applications, and writes miscellaneous reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of graphic displays, presentations, reports.
  • Coordinates with other disciplines as required.
  • Participates in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing designs and drawings performed by others.
  • Provides engineering services during construction activities by reviewing shop drawings for conformance with specifications; prepares records and progress reports defining construction progress; observes construction procedures under the guidance of a more experienced professional, and evaluates the results from quality control testing.
  • Performs field observations of construction where appropriate.
  • Supports the preparation and maintenance of project work plans, scopes, and schedules.
  • Prepares preliminary man-hour, cost and material quantity estimates.
  • Assists with the establishment and maintenance of project files.
  • Communicates regularly with client staff, project managers, external agency and consultant staff.
  • Supports the work of a multidisciplinary project team made up of widely diverse internal teams and consultants.
  • Supports the scheduling and coordination of project meetings.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
 
Special Skills:
  • Strong technical writing, oral and listening communication skills; good public speaking ability; good interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Ability to assemble and analyze data.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.  Ability to process electronic/paper documents.
  • Proficient in Microsoft personal computer applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Project Server; Working knowledge of SharePoint and other Project Management / production support systems.
  • CAD skills preferred.
