Atkins’ Transportation is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first-choice designer for local and national highway authorities, contractors and developers. We are working on many high-profile projects and frameworks nationwide, including Cambridge to Huntingdon A14 upgrade, Smart Motorways and Roads Investment programmes through the Collaborative Delivery Framework for Highways England, HS2 and the West Midlands Shared Professional Services.

To meet our growth ambitions, we are seeking high calibre Project Safety Advisors to work within a team on an expanding portfolio of the biggest and most challenging UK projects. With the implementation of the CDM 2015 Regulations we require people to support our Principal Designer role with high quality safety advice but also to work in collaborative project teams with contractors and clients to make safety the centre of everything we do.

We will seek to appoint two or more posts working with our larger infrastructure teams based in Birmingham and Epsom, although there will also be a requirement to travel across the UK and potentially abroad to meet the needs of our projects and clients. The person appointed will be expected to work as part of a team with our other health and safety professionals across the UK.

Responsibilities:
• Acting as Project Safety Advisor in support of our Principal Designer role discharging duties under CDM 2015
• Preparing and checking documentation in support of the above
• Facilitating and delivering project health and safety workshops with internal teams
• Facilitating and delivering project health and safety workshops with collaborative teams including clients and contractors
• Embodying safety leadership to develop behavioural safety on projects and in teams, ensuring that all our infrastructure teams develop their approach to safety as a natural behaviour.
• Liaising with senior health and safety internal and external stakeholders.
• Maintaining a knowledge base of current and future developments in the health and safety field and communicating the relevant aspects to a wide group of infrastructure professionals.
• Presenting to clients and key stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client focused manner.
• Working collaboratively across the Atkins Group.
• Delivery of classroom based health and safety training relevant to infrastructure professionals.
• Preparing relevant parts of fee offers to support work winning activity.


Requirements:
Essential
• Appropriate academic qualifications, with relevant professional qualifications supporting development as a project safety advisor.
• Excellent working knowledge of CDM 2015.
• Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. local authorities, Highways England, developers and major contractors.
• Demonstrable knowledge of the statutory framework for health and safety in a workplace and construction environment.
• Knowledge of relevant Standards for Quality, Safety, Security and Environmental aspects of design projects.
• NEBOSH General or Construction Certificates.
• Knowledge and experience of the process of delivering high quality infrastructure in design and construction.
• Proven ability to manage and organise own workload to meet programme and budget targets.
• Proven ability to keep control in pressurised situations and deliver work to the required quality within set timeframes.

Desirable
• A NEBOSH diploma in occupational safety and health.
• Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Institution or can demonstrate good progression; and/or Chartered Member of IOSH or can demonstrate good progression.
• Knowledge of Highways England’s framework and processes for documenting safety in a design and construction environment.
• Experience of business process improvement techniques, for example, Lean Construction.
• Proven ability to deliver classroom based training to small or large groups.
• Qualified Road Safety Audit team member or leader (HD19/03).

• Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills both verbally and in writing.
• A hard working and flexible individual, who is a team player, possesses great attention to detail, is reliable, proactive and shows initiative whilst able to keep cool under pressure and when working to often demanding deadlines.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within a larger multi-discipline team within a budget and programme agreed with others.
• A high expectation of performance for themselves.
• Customer focused with good relationship management skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
• A collaborative approach to working with others focussing on customer value.
• Be available to travel across the UK and work away from home, including periods overseas on assignments.

• Have a valid UK driving licence.

Training
Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
