Atkins Transport Consulting & Advisory is a strategic management consultancy dedicated to addressing the transport sector’s most challenging problems. Working at the front end of decision-making, we are well-placed to help clients develop strategies, services, projects and products from inception through to delivery and operation. We do this through four areas of expertise. Transaction, Commercial & Sponsorship, Rail Advisory and Strategy & Business Transformation. We are looking to grow our Rail Advisory Team and are seeking candidates at the Principal Consultant and Managing Consultant level. Candidates should have experience in the development of rail schemes; with a track record of delivering rail analysis and business case development to the highest standards. You will be accountable for the overall quality and timeliness of the delivery of assignments and you will need to be comfortable working with client senior leaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Engagement with our clients at all levels, winning their trust, and shaping the development of rail analysis and business cases to support their needs, through the promotion of rigour, quality, and adoption of best practice.
  • Managing and working within multi-disciplinary teams to deliver excellent results for our clients.
  • Providing technical leadership to projects in the rail business case space; supporting the professional development of the wider team.
  • Deliver evidence base studies to support rail investment and capability to review, challenge and scrutinise work in this area.
  • Provide advice to external and internal clients on rail business case development and projects.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and engaging with a range of client stakeholders up to board level.
  • Manage or support project or tender opportunities.
  • Resource allocation in liaison with the project and team managers.  
  • Mentor and support more junior staff.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree or equivalent qualifications, but significant relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Experience in rail scheme development including drafting Rail Business Cases to HM Treasury Green Book and/or STAG standard.
  • Skills, experience and qualifications relevant to Rail Business Case development, including (but not exclusively) demand and revenue forecasting, cost modelling, economic appraisal, commercial expertise and rail policy knowledge.
  • Experience of supporting Business Cases through assurance and to successful approval.
  • Experience in the management and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Good report writing, verbal and presentation skills, and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss planning issues.
  • Excellent time management skills - able to prioritise and work effectively under pressure, with proven success in meeting tight deadlines.
  • Commercial awareness and business development skills.
  • Experience building lasting relationships with clients at all levels in a business environment; with the ability to identify opportunities for adding further value to the client relationship.
  • A pro-active approach to work; enjoy working with a variety of people, but also comfortable working independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people to influence and lead.
