SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Atlanta, GA Cultural Resources Group as a Senior Architectural Historian.


MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Under the direction of the Sciences Practice Director, grow Atkins’ Atlanta cultural resources portfolio and lead cultural resources work production. Provides leadership, direction and technical guidance to ensure that quality cultural resource technical services are provided to clients and that operating performance targets are met. Manages project production and task financial management to ensure quality, client satisfaction, continued production backlog, and profitability of all projects.

Projects primarily relate to transportation and infrastructure development for clients in the public sector. Includes managing, conducting and reviewing desktop analysis and cultural resource surveys for a wide range of project types and scale.


JOB DUTIES
  • Project Production and Management. 
  • Ensures appropriate staff allocation to projects in consideration of project schedules, budgets, key milestone dates and work products. 
  • Monitors and enforces compliance with established safety and quality control standards, ensuring that appropriate safety and quality assurance activities are being performed throughout the operating unit. 
  • Reviews project QC plans and periodic QA compliance audits on current or recently completed projects. 
  • Assists staff in resolving problems concerning work with the various business units.
  • In time, we anticipate creating a small cultural resources team to service the Georgia infrastructure and transportation market. 
  • This position may involve supervising and training/mentoring junior staff, and managing a small team.
  • Technical Excellence, maintains visibility and professional currency by actively participating in professional and civic organizations and encourages staff to do the same. 
  • Marketing and Client Maintenance. 
  • May participate in pursuing new project opportunities by preparing proposal materials, creating labor and fee estimates, and maintaining contacts with current and prospective clients. 
  • Contracts and Financial work. 
  • May assist sales leads and project managers to staff new pursuits and assist with contract negotiations. 
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
  • Candidates must be willing and prepared to spend time in the field and travel to project sites with some overnight visits required. 
  • Projects will generally be in Georgia but could also be located outside of the state, as needed.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • At minimum, must meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards for History or Architectural History including a graduate degree in History or Architectural History or a closely related field. 
  • Ideal candidate has seven to ten years of full-time professional CRM experience conducting historical research and non-archaeological historic resource surveys plus demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • Candidates must have at least 10 years’ experience with the following activities: historical research, non-archaeological historic resource surveys and cultural resource management services.

SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills. 
  • Proven ability to manage individuals and teams, provide leadership, and manage project production. 
  • Must have business vision, excellent communication skills, and be able to represent the firm effectively to clients, key public officials, and the community in general. 
  • Prior supervisory skills a definite plus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior's professional qualification standards and must qualify as a Historian or Architectural Historian on federal, state, and local cultural resource permits. 
  • Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with National Historic Preservation Act regulations (including Section 106) and other federal, state, and local regulatory requirements pertinent to cultural resources. 
  • Candidates must have experience coordinating with SHPOs, THPOs, federal and state agency representatives, and land owners/managers regarding cultural resources. 
  • Experience with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the Georgia SHPO are preferred but experience with DOT and SHPO offices in other states may be acceptable.
  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills required. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. 
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail, technical writing, computer and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with reading transportation engineering plans is a benefit but not required.
  • Experience with HABS/HAER/HALS.
  • Experience nominating resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • It is desirable that candidates have experience with NEPA studies including cultural resource components of Environmental Impact Statements and Environmental Assessments (EIS/EAs). 
  • Eligible for project management training.
