Atkins is one of the world’s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies. We have the breadth and depth of expertise to respond to the most technically challenging and time critical projects. Our desire to make the world a better place for everyone underpins everything we do. We deliver value to our clients in the public, regulated and private sectors by drawing on our multi-disciplinary expertise from across Atkins.

Our ADS&T division supports the defence sector (both government and industry) and the aerospace and security sectors through the provision of advanced engineering, technical and project management advice. Our role as a trusted advisor allows us to offer rewarding careers to people who want to enhance their skills and build on their experience in this dynamic sector.

We offer cutting edge ‘through-life’ support to our clients and because we don’t manufacture anything ourselves, they can rely on us to offer independent and unbiased recommendations.

We take a joined-up approach to our work and our people frequently work across different disciplines. The work is always challenging and evolving, but if you’re ready to take on a challenge, and assume technical, commercial and project responsibility to your full potential, then Atkins is a great place to further your career.

The opportunity

Atkins is seeking a highly experienced and competent Senior or Principal Environmental Consultant to join our Advanced Engineering practice, where you will complement our growing team of safety and asset management experts. You will lead the environmental and sustainability aspects of the projects that we support and be expected to act as a link to the environmental capability in other divisions, such as infrastructure, transportation and energy, to ensure we make the best use of the capability across the whole company.

A secondary technical capability would be advantageous, in particular experience of safety management, and a willingness to develop this would be highly desirable.

Based at Atkins' offices in either Bristol or Aldershot, the role is likely to involve working on client sites, which maybe be in the locality of our offices or further away and hence may require travel with some overnight stays. A willingness to be mobile between offices for meetings and to facilitate team working will be essential.

The successful candidate will be required to assess the sustainability and potential environmental impact of defence procurement projects and operations, develop environmental arguments for novel and complex systems, develop sustainability policy and environmental management systems and run occasional training courses. The role is technically and commercially challenging and you will be expected to be able to work independently, manage teams and interact with customers at a high level. Significant experience of the environmental legislation and standards applicable to the defence domain is essential.

You will work closely with our clients either in the office or on-site, so your communication skills are just as important as technical expertise. You will be primarily engaged in air, sea and land defence related projects, but may also support other sectors such as aerospace, infrastructure, transportation and energy. The diversity of work on offer means you will face different challenges every day, developing a range of experience and skills alongside our experts.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV, details of any current or previously held security clearance.
