Atkins Nuclear has been operating for over 40 years with operations based in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America, and are fully engaged in the development of the next generation of nuclear power. Atkins are also currently embarked on an exciting journey to become the global leader in providing Decommissioning and Waste Management services.
As a result of continued growth, we are looking to recruit a wide range of experienced Decommissioning/Waste Management and Radiological Protection professionals to help us in achieving our goal of becoming the global leader in this arena.
We are looking for creative individuals who want to shape the Atkins Decommissioning, Waste Management and Radiological Protection service offerings on a global scale. Successful candidates will be based out of our Rutherford House (Whitehaven) office delivering high hazard decommissioning working as part of a multi-discipline team. Responsibilities for the role will be focused around those detailed below, there will be an expectation to support other team members outside this specific discipline where the need arises. There will also be potential opportunity for national and international travel for the right candidates.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in environmental, engineering, or science discipline, Post Graduate Degree qualified desirable
  • A minimum of 10 years environmental experience. A significant level of experience working within the nuclear industry and directly on a nuclear licenced sites as well as other highly regulated industries
  • Chartered or working towards chartership
  • RWA or working towards accreditation
  • Hands-on experience at a nuclear licensed site is essential
  • Sufficient level of experience to provide technical guidance as the subject matter expert and provide a high level of technical support to direct reports and other team members

Specific knowledge and expertise in the following areas:

  • Environmental Permitting (especially Radioactive Substances Regulations, and Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EA(S)R)), including understanding of radioactive discharges/disposals and prospective radiological dose modelling
  • Compliance with Nuclear Site Licence Conditions under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965
  • Environmental planning, permitting, and associated assessment studies.
  • Delivery of environmental assessment and option identification studies including BAT, BPM, EIADR, EIA, and Article 37 General Data Submissions
  • Delivery of Environmental Safety Case and full facility Environmental Case documentation
  • Development and implementation of waste management strategies
  • Gaseous and liquid waste management on nuclear licenced sites, including accountancy and reporting to the regulator
  • Hands on environmental management experience within construction and demolition on nuclear licenced sites
  • Implementation of environmental management systems to ISO 14001
  • Experienced in environmental and assurance auditing and activities
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Experience of liaising directly with stakeholders and clients. Previous experience liaising directly with regulators including the Environment Agency and SEPA is essential
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a range of internal / external stakeholders
  • Commercial and project awareness
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • Management of staff, client liaison, project management and bid development experience also essential.

Additional Information
Travel to other company sites may be necessary. There will also be opportunities for international travel and applicants with a desire for non-UK based assignments will be welcomed.
