Atkins is one of the world's leading providers of professional, technologically-based consultancy and support services with over 18,000 staff in offices throughout the UK and overseas.
 
We currently have a position available within the Infrastructure Practice team in our Glasgow or Edinburgh Offices for a Senior Engineer specialising in clean and dirty water solutions.  We undertake varied work and have an extensive client base of water company and other clients.  

The Role
 
The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a range of water and sewerage projects from conception through to construction. The role will require knowledge and understanding of UK standards and experience of working with water companies will be beneficial. The post holder should ideally have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the UK water industry and shall be able to work both independently and as part of regional/national teams. Main responsibilities will include; general data gathering and understanding of data requirements; preparation of written reports, calculations, specifications and contract documents; coordination of multidisciplinary project teams; supervision of Engineers and Technicians; and, completion of client reporting systems.

The role will initially involve acting as Lead Design Engineer (LDE) on the Scottish Water ‘Charley Horse’ programme. This programme has been set-up to address historical issues within the existing infrastructure in the form of ‘dead legs’ within the water supply network.

A list of sites has been generated and the Lead Design Engineer will be responsible for reviewing the initial desktop study findings with Scottish Water Operations staff, and for developing solutions to the issues. These solutions will then need to be fed back to Operations for sign-off before producing design deliverables suitable for construction. 

Atkins is working in joint venture with Scottish Water and RPS on the Water & Wastewater Infrastructure/Non-Infrastructure AMP6 programme, which is to be delivered by various offices throughout the UK and our Global Design Centre in Bangalore. There are currently 500 sites on the Charley Horse programme, of which Atkins has been allocated an area to the south-west of Glasgow, and will be responsible for the delivery of design packages for the works to be undertaken at approximately 140 of these sites.

Supporting the LDE will be a team based in Glasgow and Edinburgh comprising a Project Manager, Site Surveyor, Assistant Engineers and Senior Technicians. The LDE will be responsible for utilising these resources and managing the technical delivery of the design deliverables required for the works. The LDE will also be responsible for liaising with the client and providing progress updates to the Project Manager.



The Candidate

The successful candidate will hold a relevant civil engineering degree/HND, or a related degree and will be or working towards Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status. 
 
Essential Requirements
  • Experience in the design of water supply schemes
  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to generate and maintain hard and electronic filing systems
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Physically fit (for site visits)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Confident presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel to regional Atkins offices, and initially to the Scottish Water/RPS offices
  • Team Player with ambition to drive continuous improvements 
Desirable Qualities
  • Chartered/Incorporated Engineer Status
  • Experience or working with Water Companies in the UK
  • Experience in BIM
  • CSCS Registered
  • Water Hygiene card
 Additional Information
 
This is a full time, contract role. The role will require the candidate to be based in Glasgow or Edinburgh, and to undertake site visits and meetings in Glasgow/Edinburgh, and subsequently in other offices throughout the UK, as required for delivery of the projects.
