Role Description
The opportunity to shape the future of the rail market in the UK
Atkins is the leading UK engineering consultancy in transportation, and we are seeking a Strategic
Rail - Market Director to lead our significant portfolio in the UK rail sector. Reporting to our UK MD
Transportation, the Strategic Rail - Market Director will lead a team to ensure both a client and
delivery focus to the Atkins Group for the UK rail market.
The role will require a mix of foresight to develop long terms strategies that deliver both revenue and margin growth, as well as strong relationship skills to develop deep client understanding. As Market Director you will be responsible for creating a network and culture within Atkins that understands the market and client needs, as well as winning work through cross selling across the wider Atkins group.
Transportation in Atkins UK is an organisation of 2700 people and in excess of £480m annual
turnover, delivering a wide portfolio of projects ranging from strategic advice through to large EPC
schemes. Our strategic rail market is the largest market in the UK, with annual turnover around
£200m. There is significant opportunity for further growth through key projects like High-Speed Rail,
Central Rail Systems Alliance, Crewe Hub, East West Rail, Network Rail Regions and unlocking
opportunities with the creation of Great British Railways.
As well as delivering in year performance the Market Director is also responsible for how we navigate significant change in the rail sector from adoption of digital railways, net zero and carbon, social value and the transition of the rail sector to bring track and train together as part of Great British Railways.
Furthermore, this role plays a key part of the Transportation leadership team, shaping our overall
direction in the sector and at Group via our Global Rail Market.
With so much activity and change expected in the market over the next 6-24 months, there has never been a more dynamic and exciting time to be a leader in the UK rail market.
Principal Requirements:

  • Demonstrable C suite client and stakeholder management skills.
  • A well-rounded leadership and management background with demonstrable experience of management, project delivery, and business development experience.
  • A proven track record of success through the delivery of business strategy and achievement
    of business goals and targets.
  • A recognised and well networked profile in the UK rail market is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • A passion for health & safety and the drive for continuous development of our behavioural
    safety culture working within Atkins, with our clients and with our suppliers to ensure we
    minimise incidents across the industry.
  • Development and delivery of a long-term market strategy that positions Atkins as the leading rail provider in the UK and allows us to shape the future that is the Digital Railway.
  • Development of key stakeholder relationships by getting close to the heart of our clients,
    building on existing relationships and creating new ones to maximise the opportunities for
    Atkins and support the re-shaping of the market. Expanding Atkins client base beyond
    Network Rail and the contractors will be key.
  • Drive growth in market share, identifying and engaging with new target clients, developing
    brand and reputation, stimulating the market with insights, thought leadership and innovation.
  • Delivery of the financial and operational performance in line with the 5-year plan and annual
    P&L targets through the successful delivery of our portfolio of projects.
  • Ensuring that client satisfaction with performance is high and at least in the upper quartile of
    client satisfaction measures such as PRISM used by Network Rail.
  • A leader within Transportation, you will work with the senior team to build the culture of the
    business and play a lead role in shaping the future of Transportation.
  • Building a strong profile across the Atkins group, proactively identifying, and developing cross selling opportunities for the wider Group.
  • Supporting Atkins world-wide growth in the rail sector by taking a leading role on the Global
    Rail forum and seeking opportunities to win work and grow international capability.
  • Be an ambassador for the business; attending and speaking at relevant industry events,
    developing alliances and partnerships and generally leveraging opportunities to build greater
    awareness of Atkins and improve our standing and reputation.

The Individual:

  • A proven track record of delivering in a board level position either in the rail sector or wider
    transportation sectors in the UK or internationally.
  • Ability to analyse market potential, and position Atkins as a leading partner and supplier
    through a reputation for excellence and quality of delivery.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading an organisation from setting a clear vision and strategy
    through to the delivery of business goals and targets.
  • A track record for driving health & safety culture and performance.
  • A result orientated, inspiring, hard-working, and flexible leader who works well as part of a
    team.
  • Customer focused with excellent relationship management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbally and in writing with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Strong influencing skills negotiating skills that have led to demonstrable results.
  • A supportive and encouraging approach to identifying and nurturing talent and developing a high performing team.
  • Highly mobile and available to travel across the UK and work away from home, including
    periods overseas on assignments.
  • Degree level and equivalent professional qualifications.
