As part of our 30-year remit to manage and improve the capital’s orbital motorway network, we deliver major improvement projects, such widening 38 miles of the M25, refurbishing tunnels and bridges, and installing hundreds of variable messaging signs and gantries, helping to maximise the use of the network and deliver more reliable journeys. We also manage the Dartford River crossing, and operate and maintain 440 kilometres of motorway providing our customer and road user with a world-class highway service.

We are currently looking for a Structures Engineer to join the team working out of our Leatherhead, South Mimms or Dartford office.

 

As a Structures Engineer you will assist the Structures Manager with the management of the structures asset inventory in order to meet contractual requirements. This will include the identification and development of best value solutions for inclusion within the forward programme of structures work based upon knowledge acquired from inspections and existing records.

 

The role will also require from the planning and prioritisation of treatment programmes including update of the Asset Management Forward Plan, quarterly and annually. Managing resources (both in-house and subcontract). Dealing with emergency works and co-ordinating maintenance activities.



Responsibilities –

 

  • Developing maintenance and renewal strategies for all Structure categories i.e. bridges and large culverts, small span structures, retaining walls, sign/signal gantries and masts.
  • Management of the inspection regime for structures - agreeing risk based strategies;
  • Responsible for the compliance with legislation in relation to bridge structures;
  • Developing solutions for specified structures;
  • Liaison with the DBFO Co to advise and inform of current and future liabilities.
  • Liaison within the Connect Plus Services (CPS) structures team to ensure sharing of best practice and coordination of maintenance and renewal activities;
  • Identifying essential routine maintenance requirements for individual structures;
  • Liaison with the CPS on-roads team to ensure consistency in maintenance regimes.
  • Attendance at call-outs for the management of emergency incidents involving structure assets.
  • Managing the preparation of all technical approval forms (TAFs) where required. This will include AIPs, design/assessment/check certificates and departures from standards;
  • Assist with the management of future bridge assessment work in line with DBFO Co contract requirements and Highways Agency standards.
  • Review risk assessments and method statements for site activities undertaken by contractors or sub contractors.
  • Carry out other duties required by the Structures Manager commensurate with the role.

Qualifications/ skills/ experience -

Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with a minimum 4 years extensive experience within the maintenance of Highway Structures. Applicant to be near Chartered status. Candidate to also have a good understanding of Health & Safety and hold a valid CSCS card. Applicants are expected to have good IT and presentation skills.
