The Transportation UK&E division in Atkins brings together the capabilities of our Highway, Rail & Local Transport teams into a single business of 3,000 talented engineers and professionals. As part of our growth we are seeking a Technical Director Signalling and Communication Systems (SCS). The purpose of the role will be to provide Strategic Technical Leadership and Assurance for the activity undertaken by the Signalling and Communications Practice. 
 
Responsibilities 
  • Technical oversight of the businesses delivery of Signalling and Communications activity through the whole asset lifecycle, and the ElectroLogIXS/FSS product suite in particular:
    • Development of new products with associated trials and product approval.
    • Scheme development.
    • Delivery of Signalling and Communications Systems through Installation, testing and commissioning.
    • Product lifecycle support including obsolescence management.
  • Raising the technical profile of Atkins in the industry, and the part the organisation and its products such as ElectroLogIXS/FSS should play in delivering the Digital Railway of the future.
  • Building and developing relationships of a technical bias with key industry stakeholders including key clients, suppliers, professional bodies and government/regulatory bodies, such as NR, TfL, Alstom, Siemens, IRSE and the ORR.
  • Supporting the development of Technical capability to exploit emerging opportunities for connected vehicles and highways infrastructure.
  • Leading the development of Technical capability to exploit existing and emerging sector opportunities, across people, processes and technology. This includes developing new capabilities in the areas of software development and assurance, and product support and obsolescence management.
  • Providing assurance to the Transportation SLT about the setup, performance and risk management of activities within the business from a technical perspective, with personal involvement in the larger, more complex commissions.
  • Supports the development of capability from other Practices and divisions within Atkins that support the delivery of Signalling and Communications activity.
  • Supports the effective operation of the Transportation Technical Leaders Group (TLG) including the implementation of Transportation-wide common approaches to technical delivery where appropriate.
  • Assumes a leadership role in promoting safe delivery of projects
  • Highlights technical risks and takes appropriate action to mitigate
  • Line manage the relevant Professional Heads of Discipline
  • Reports to the Practice Director – Signalling and Communications Systems
The role plays a key part of the UK Transportation division and will be required to coordinate/collaborate with the other business leaders, across Markets, Project delivery Practice, the Engineering Practice and Business development. 


Requirements 
  • Senior Engineer, FIET/FIRSE, with detailed experience in a Rail specific domain/environment.
  • Understanding of intelligent systems deployment on high speed roads
  • Has the capability/potential of fulfilling the duties of Network Chair/Fellow for Rail Systems.
  • Understanding of Engineering Safety Management and the Regulated Industry frameworks.
