Your next calling:
As an Operator Trainee, you will attend a paid training program to learn how to monitor Georgia’s roadways, including detecting, confirming, responding to, and updating scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents and congestion. Upon completion of training, you will be a certified TOC Operator I at the Georgia Department of Transportation’s state-of-the-art Transportation Management Center (TMC). The TMC is the eyes and ears of detection and management of all activity on Georgia’s interstates and state highways.
Atkins is currently seeking energetic, motivated, detail-oriented self-starters to join our Macon, GA TMC staff as a full-time Operator Trainee in the Transportation Management Center.
• This is a full-time entry level position with benefits working for Atkins at the Georgia Department of Transportation’s TMC.
• Up to 8 weeks of classroom training in Atlanta 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday followed by on-the-job training in Macon.
• Beginning week 9, schedule is 2nd Shift – 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, including some weekends and holidays.
• Starting pay for this entry-level position is $13.50/hour, with a raise to $15.00/hour upon completion of training and certification.
What a Traffic Operation Center (TOC) Operator does:
• Detects and responds to traffic management data information from multiple real-time sources such as alarms, traffic flow maps, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, video display wall, police radio scanners, phone calls, and other sources;
• Verifies and classifies traffic events such as congestion, incidents, special events, construction, and device malfunctions using CCTV and coordination with other personnel;
• Views, creates, modifies, and enables response plans when traffic event is detected. Evaluates and responds to major incidents by determining lanes blocked, injuries, fatalities, hazmat spills, and estimated incident duration;
• Operates pan-tilt-zoom cameras and scans multiple monitors. Activates and changes Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to include traveler information and to notify travelers of traffic events;
• Detects and verifies field device failures. Responds to device failure, including actions such as acknowledgement of alarm, viewing and evaluating device, determining location, attempting reset, classifying alarm, recording type, and providing and escalating notification to the TMC manager and field maintenance technicians;
• Updates traffic information on the 511 website;
• Communicates with the Traffic Operations Manager and interagency traffic management personnel (including local emergency responder personnel) about traffic management and traffic events;
• Coordinates with and dispatches the Highway Emergency Response Operators (HEROs), State Road and Toll Authority (SRTA), other TMC Operators, interagency traffic management personnel, First Responders, emergency personnel, and other private providers during confirmed incidents, emergencies, weather events, and special events;
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
What you need to bring to the table:
Have you worked in the transportation, public safety, or commercial operations environment? If the answer is yes, you already have valuable skills to bring to this position. Minimum educational requirement is a High School diploma or GED. Dispatching experience is a plus, but not required. Success in our organization demands a high level of professionalism. • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, management, other departments, state agencies, the public, and peers
• Good teamwork skills and positive working attitude required
• Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and prioritized responses in a fast-paced, real-time environment, remaining calm and effective under pressure
• Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills
• Accurately and quickly read maps; knowledge of local and regional geography a plus
• Excellent customer service skills
Technical Skills:
Finally, in a technology driven world, it’s important to know your way around a computer. For this role, it will be important to have a demonstrated knowledge of the following:
• Basic computer skills proficiency, especially Microsoft Office suite and other PC based programs
• Type at least 30-35 WPM
• Ability to navigate Google maps, Waze, and other mapping tools
• Prior work experience in a technology-dependent environment; traffic related applications and radio operations are a plus
Flexibility:
• Candidates must be willing and able to work 2nd shift, 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm, 40 hours/week rotating through all days of the week, including weekends and holidays.
