Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises circa 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of circa 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.

Within the Consultancy Practice is the Transport Planning sub-Practice of circa 300 staff, delivering a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients. In 2018 we are growing our Transport Planning sub-Practice and are looking to recruit talented individuals responsible for the delivery of transport planning projects to help us deliver and win work.

The successful candidate will have a background in transport planning and engineering with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients. The design team in Transport Planning has a wide-ranging capability, from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning, assessment and then detailed design and implementation. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to work as part of an in-house project team to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’ for the planning, design and delivery of development-led and infrastructure projects.

The team has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace, Our Practice is involved in a number of high profile design projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas and our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international development and public realm projects. We also provide specialist input to a range of strategic rail, highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business. Key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, LB Harrow, London City Airport, Heathrow Airport and The Crown Estate.

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline, and are expanding the physical presence of our Transport Planning Practice in the region; we have a long-term home in Epsom however have also now established presence in other Atkins’ office locations in the South East, notably Aldershot and Croydon. It’s an exciting time to join, and we welcome ambitious candidates to support in realising this growth plan.

Job Description

We’re seeking an ambitious Engineer to lead our design capability in the Croydon Office and linking in with resourcing needs across our Practice at a national level. We’re a successful team with a well-balanced blend of skills to face our client needs, and are looking for an enthusiastic individual to add further value to our offer to the marketplace. You will have a demonstrable track record and solid technical capability in the Traffic Engineering / Public Realm field, with experience in managing project delivery; this exciting opportunity will provide you with a platform to further develop our business in London and the South East.

Your key responsibilities in this role will include the following:

• Managing a range of design projects from small to large scale public realm/traffic engineering projects
• Working proactively and supporting project managers in the delivery of large scale public realm investigations and scheme design, including the preparation of drawings, scheme costs and reports
• Evaluating engineering problems and providing workable solutions which address issues during design and implementation
• Preparation of scheme drawings from feasibility design through to detailed design
• Ensuring that projects are completed to client specifications, budgets and programme
• Working with planners, traffic modellers, architects, landscape architects, master planners and clients as required on technical aspects of projects
• Provide design guidance and act as mentor to more junior members of staff.


Requirements

Qualifications
• A Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
• Chartered Engineer status

Essential Criteria
• Project and people management skills with a hands-on attitude to technical project work
• Appropriate previous experience of working in this field (development and implementation of urban highway, transport and public realm schemes, including cycle schemes, bus priority projects, high street improvements and signalised junctions)
• Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD is essential.
• Working knowledge of CDM and relevant Health and Safety regulations
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships and manage stakeholders
• Delivery of work in line with DMRB guidance.

Desirable Criteria
• Experience of 3D design using AutoCAD Civils 3D is desirable
• Experience with Projectwise
• Working knowledge of construction contracts.

Responsibilities
o Ensure that projects are completed to client specifications, to budgets and deadlines.
o Positively contribute to the delivery of the business strategy for the company in association with senior staff.
o Provide technical delivery of development planning projects.
o Act as mentor to junior members of staff.

We seek a candidate that displays a sound awareness of the industry and demonstrable standard of technical competency to provide clients with complete confidence in our design solutions, and the enthusiasm and passion to work with and assist in developing the next generation of specialists.

Based in our Croydon office, you will work with an established team of professionals to grow the breadth and volume of this technical service offering to clients. The ideal candidate needs to be a driven individual with strong technical acumen, commercial awareness and experience in project management.
