A day in the life

Joelle Doocey - Graduate Mechanical Engineer

I am a Graduate Mechanical engineer and have been working at Atkins for 2 years now. As a graduate mechanical engineer, I am responsible for designing heating, cooling, and ventilation systems for a range of building types, for both new buildings and retrofit situations. I have worked on residential properties as well as a lot of Net Zero retrofitting projects, Heathrow expansion, HS2 and some residential projects too. Outside of project work, I mentor an Arkwright Scholar, I also use my volunteer days to help interview potential Arkwright Scholars. The Arkwright Scholarship Scheme is available to young people doing their A-Levels and it is an engineering scholarship for students who wish to pursue a career in engineering. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Atkins so far, I am never bored and have learnt a lot across many projects in just 2 years. If you’re interested in working hard in multidiscipline teams alongside other engineers – this is the job for you!

Jon Fairbairn - Senior Mechanical Engineer

I joined Atkins in September 2015 on the Graduate Development Programme. Now, I am a Senior Mechanical Engineer with the London Building Services team. During my 6 years with Atkins I have worked on a number of different projects in a variety of sectors, but predominantly within Rail and Residential. In the rail sector I have worked on Bank Station, Euston HS2 Enabling, Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme.

I am part of the Atkins Building Services People Matter's group, which focuses on four areas: Training, Next Generation Engineers, Line Management and Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity. Being part of this group provides the opportunity to discuss important matters and find solutions that can help improve the work-life of those in the UK Building Services team in a variety of ways. Atkins has been a great company to work for and has helped me develop into the engineer I am now. I was supported throughout the process to achieving my chartership and continue to be supported since.

Neda Rezaei - Associate Mechanical Engineer

I have been with Atkins since 2013, I joined as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and progressed to become an Associate Mechanical Engineer. In a typical day I could be working with bid teams to capture internal and external business opportunities, I could be collaborating and leading a team to deliver project design to the high level of standards. Furthermore, I am the London Office QSSE Champion for Quality making sure the delivery of the projects are in line with the Business requirements. I am also a part of an ED&I panel for the Recruitment process ensuring equal opportunities are provided for everyone to join the business.

Throughout my time at Atkins I have had the support of my line managers. I can discuss what I want to achieve as my career goals with them and they have always been guiding me through the process.

Don’t hesitate to join the building services team. The opportunities are endless. The global nature of the business means there is no stopping.
