Fault Studies Engineer

If you are a Fault Studies engineer with experience within the nuclear industry, then we are waiting for you to join the team. We are looking for candidates that enjoy assessing plant performance, liaising with clients, and have excellent technical report writing skills.



The Role

As part of our growing Nuclear Safety Analysis discipline you’ll be a Fault Studies Engineer working on consultancy projects for a range of clients in the nuclear industry. You will be required to liaise with clients, define project requirements, and report outcomes through the production of high quality technical reports.

You will engage with clients to build a thorough understanding reactor systems and plant scenarios, and assess the plant performance in design basis and beyond design basis fault conditions. In this role you will also support clients in managing internal and external stakeholders, including the regulator.
You will be expected to contribute to, and learn from the wider nuclear safety community within Atkins, taking advantage of the global expertise we have across a range of engineering disciplines.

The Person

You will have strong attention to detail and outstanding analytical skills. You will also be able to work autonomously or as part of a project team, and have a relevant engineering/science degree. You will either be a chartered scientist or engineer, or will be working towards this.
In addition to having a solid understanding of the principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer, you will be able to demonstrate the following:
• Experience working with nuclear safety analysis codes such us MAAP, GOTHIC, TRACE or RELAP5
• Knowledge of Light Water Reactor (PWR, BWR) technology
• A solid understanding of the principles of nuclear safety
• Excellent technical writing skills
• Nuclear industry experience to supplement your academic background
You may also be able to demonstrate the below desirable requirements:
• Knowledge to work with UNIX/LINUX computer systems
• Proven capability in delivering engineering projects
• An understanding of the nuclear regulatory principles in the UK
•Ability to write scripts in Matlab, Python or other languages

The Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) team delivers work in the areas of PSA, equipment reliability and probabilistic consequence analysis. The Deterministic Safety Analysis (DSA) team delivers work in the areas of thermal hydraulics, design basis and severe accident analysis.
