We are seeking a Field Planning Engineer to join our team in Augusta, ME or New York State to lead and work on various Power Grid Utility and Substation Engineering projects.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • Lead overall distribution line design for capital projects.
  • Perform site visits and system walkdowns, estimating, and attending project meetings.
  • Perform site visit data gathering and determine specifications including; Conductor selection, insulation, plans and profiles, cross section details, LiDAR and aerial photo data.
  • Utilization of wetlands, vernal pool and sensitive resource data in line and structure design and placement.
  • Work within a Distribution team to develop efficient and reliable scope of work, detailed designs of overhead and /or underground electric Distribution systems.
  • Drive the project plan for distribution line routing and strategy, specifically:
    • Decide whether to rebuild existing lines or obtain additional right of way based on area congestion and local politics/permitting issues.
    • Determine required structure designs based on design constraints.
    • Determine routing in and around into congested stations to optimize design/reliability and minimize the number of crossings.
  • Create scoping documentation - including proposed scope of work in word form and plotted on circuit map.
  • Create Detailed engineering design with sketch that includes scope of work installs, transfers, removals, and T tables with applicable CUs, Qtys and PayID template that corresponds to the scope of work.
  • Creation of SAP executable work orders.
  • Submit Highway permit requests as required.
  • Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.
  • Review/Design distribution line plan and profile drawings using AUTOCAD/Firefly.
  • Accountable to provide design activities in compliance with applicable client utility distribution standards and NESC/other standards codes and standards, including SNC-Lavalin’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
  • Design of Distribution level construction packages for both overhead and underground construction, including selection of Distribution system equipment, and utilizing GIS information to aide in design.
  • Preparation of engineering calculations, including pole loading, guying, transformer sizing, conductor loading / sagging, load studies, and voltage studies.
  • Preparation of specifications for material and equipment selection.
  • Deliver accurate and thorough electrical designs that will meet industry standards and specifications and meet prudent engineering practices.
  • Review internal and external designs for code compliance, good design practice and constructability.
  • Coordinate design activities with other multi-discipline project team members.
  • Provide construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintain complete project documentation with respect to engineering studies and calculations, all design packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
  • Maintain good working relationship with internal groups that support projects such as other engineering disciplines, Drafting, Project Management etc.
  • Mentor, train and provide guidance to developing engineers and designers within the department.

What will you contribute?

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Distribution electrical design.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) registration (or eligible for registration).
  • Prior utility or utility consulting experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of modern power system, including Distribution power flow, overhead and underground construction methods and Distribution system equipment.
  • Experience conducting Distribution field inspections.
  • Experience with distribution SAP work order creation.
  • Strong client focus.
  • A high level of interpersonal communication skills, including a strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE.
  • Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and provide project ownership.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS mapping software, and other applicable Distribution Design tools.
  • Additional hours may be necessary as workload dictates.
  • Daily field workdays would be required.

Expected compensation range is between $72,000 - $102,000 annually depending on skills, experience, and geographical location.
