AtkinsRéalis is seeking an Intermediate or Senior Risk Assessor to join our National Risk Assessment Team. The Team includes toxicologists, terrestrial and aquatic biologists, chemists and agrologists, and collectively has more than 100 years of experience conducting human health and ecological risk assessments. In addition to HHERAs, our team develops site-specific, risk-based guidelines and remediation objectives, prepares risk management plans for operating or decommissioned facilities, develops environmental quality guidelines, and communicates risk to clients, regulatory agencies, landowners, Indigenous communities and stakeholder groups.

The team works collaboratively across the country, supporting all sectors across AtkinsRéalis. Our National Risk Assessment Team provides services to the upstream and downstream petroleum industry, the mining industry, federal and provincial government agencies, law firms, industry associations, fertilizer production, and wood treatment companies across the country. We also provide support on the human health components of Environmental Impact Assessments and with toxicology-related permitting requirements. At AtkinsRéalis, we will provide you with exceptional training throughout your career, and mentorship from leaders and technical specialists in human health and ecological risk assessment.

We are looking to grow our Ontario team, specifically to provide additional support on provincially and federally regulated risk assessment projects in Ontario.

Location - This position would be based in one of our Ontario offices: Toronto or Ottawa, however other locations can be discussed.

Your role within the team:

  • Leading the completion of human health and ecological risk assessments for in accordance with provincial (primarily Ontario) and federal risk assessment guidance and regulatory requirements.

  • Writing effective proposals, developing appropriate budgets and completing high quality technical reports on time and within budget.

  • Communicating complex scientific material to a wide variety of audiences.

  • Consulting with clients and regulatory agencies.

  • Working with a team of environmental professionals and technical staff across multiple regions.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Understanding client objectives, technical protocols, guidelines and regulations that apply to the work/projects conducted and the rationale/developmental framework behind them.

  • Acting as a direct interface between clients and the AtkinsRéalis project team and/or regulatory bodies in Ontario, as appropriate.

  • Ensuring proper implementation and continued use of quality assurance programs and corporate policies and procedures, including Ethics and Compliance.

  • Embracing behavior-based safety and ensuring all health and safety protocols are followed.

  • Other duties as assigned/required.

The ideal candidate:

  • More than 5 years of experience conducting human health and ecological risk assessments.

  • Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change as a Qualified Person for Risk Assessment (“QPRA”) per Section 6 of O. Reg. 153/04.

  • Practiced and applied knowledge of provincial (Ontario) and federal risk assessment guidance and regulatory requirements. Experience in other provinces would be considered an asset.

  • Working knowledge of contaminated sites, site assessment and remediation.

  • Proven ability to work in a team, collaborate and provide technical and professional mentorship.

  • Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.

  • Self-motivated, with the ability to manage time and multiple deliverables accordingly.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Proven technical writing skills.

  • Commitment to excellence with a focus on quality control, quality management and attention to detail.

  • English proficiency in reading and writing, with bilingualism in French an asset.
