We have one of the most experienced environmental and geosciences engineering consulting teams in Canada, and we are seeking an Intermediate Solid Waste Management Engineer to join our team. This position is based in our Toronto, Ancaster, Ottawa, or Edmonton offices. However, consideration will be given to other locations where AtkinsRéalis has Canadian offices. This position is office/hybrid work based, focused on projects providing support on projects across Canada and internationally where needed.
The successful candidate will bring practical, progressive experience in solid waste management and be able to communicate effectively with our staff and clients, applying their technical skills and knowledge on a project basis. Liaising with regulatory agencies, networking with professionals, and developing business would be secondary duties in this role.
Your role within the team
- Participation in projects of varying complexity involving the engineering design for solid waste management facilities, including some or all of landfills, organics processing, material recovery facilities, transfer stations and public drop-off facilities – tasks may include detailed design, preparation of technical specifications, cost estimating, tender support, and construction supervision/contract administration services.
- Support waste planning opportunities, including preparing design and operations plans; generating or modifying monitoring plans for groundwater, surface water and landfill gas; and obtaining environmental compliance approvals and amendments for waste operations, air quality and stormwater management discharges.
- Project coordination and management, tracking costs and managing budgets, hiring, and directing subcontractors, etc.
- Liaising with clients and regulatory agencies.
- Executing technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness, and adherence to prescribed data testing methods.
- Preparing reports, proposals, and other project documents of varying complexity.

The ideal candidate
- Degree in Engineering (Geological, Environmental, Biosystems, Civil, or other relevant engineering backgrounds), Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Geology, Hydrogeology, or relevant field and be licensed as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or eligible for licensure within 6 months of hire. Licensure or consideration for obtaining licensing in multiple Provinces would be considered an additional asset.
- A minimum of 5 years of practical, progressive solid waste management consulting experience including relevant experience in various facets of the waste management sector.
- Possess demonstrable knowledge and skills in at least one of the following relevant disciplines, and demonstrable familiarity with the others, including landfill or facility engineering design/construction management, environmental compliance, and waste management planning support.
- Ability to identify and manage implementation of practical, cost-effective solutions to client problems and/or resolve potential non-compliance situations. Demonstrated expertise in contractor supervision, project management and contract administration.
- Proven technical writing and analytical skills.
