Summary:

  • To provide high quality consultancy services to clients; provide support to others within the AtkinsRéalis Rail & Transit Group as required and act as a source of guidance and expertise.
  • To market the services of the AtkinsRéalis Rail & Transit group.
  • To engage with clients and support them with enquiries.
  • To lead the compilation of bids.
  • To provide high quality consultancy services to clients.
  • To provide specialist engineering guidance and expertise.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Providing technical leadership to support the Dynamics, Gauging & Testing team in ensuring continuous improvement through development of staff and work methodologies.
  • Providing consultancy services as an industry expert.
  • Attending industry workshops and inputting to standards updates.
  • Provide technical briefs to the team on key topics such as interpretation of standards and the implementation of industry standards and methodologies.
  • Continually review the opportunities for expanding our client base, in conjunction with the Team/Service Leader.
  • Be instrumental to the delivery of company sales and profitability targets.
  • Maintain professional expertise by participating in an approved Continuing Professional Development Scheme.
  • To manage or support assignments as allocated by the Team/Service Leader for clients, including estimating, tendering, planning and execution.
  • To ensure that work is completed on time, to budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.
  • To ensure that all work is undertaken in accordance with AtkinsRéalis Rail & Transit’s procedures, including quality procedures and safety management system.
  • Provide advice/assistance as a technical expert in vehicle dynamics.

Essential Competencies-Vehicle and Infrastructure Gauging:

  • Experience of using multi-body simulation (MBS) software packages for rail vehicles such as Vampire and/or SIMPACK.
  • Able to create MBS vehicle models in Vampire and/or SIMPACK.
  • Knowledge of the following Railway Group Standards and European Standards:
    • BSEN14363
    • BSEN15663
    • BSEN12299
    • GMRT2141
    • GMRT2173
    • GMRT2142
    • GMRC2641
    • RIS-2773-RST

Desirable Competencies- Vehicle and Infrastructure Gauging:

  • Able to validate MBS vehicle models against static and dynamic test data.
  • Able to advise on the correct methods of testing in order to validate MBS vehicle models in accordance with European and Railway Group Standards.
  • Able to create Vampire track files for both high and low frequency characteristics.
  • Have some understand the process to obtain track data from the infrastructure maintainer and understand the process to convert into the dynamic simulation software package (i.e. Vampire or SIMPACK).
  • Able to advise on the most appropriate method of carrying out dynamic simulations to demonstrate compliance according to the latest European and Railway Group Standards.
  • Able to review and accept or reject assurance work from third party design parties using expert knowledge of the requirements of Railway Group Standards including the following:
    • BSEN14363
    • BSEN15663
    • BSEN12299
    • GMRT2141
    • GMRT2173
    • GMRT2142
    • GMRC2641
    • RIS-2773-RST
    • INTERFACES

Internal:

To work closely with your Team Leader/Service Leader, the wider Rolling Stock Delivery practice, Key Account Manager and the Account Management team in order to:

  • Deliver the highest customer service to clients through your expert advice and support.
  • Contribute to identifying new sales opportunities.
  • Contribute to UK marketing efforts.
  • Match resources to the sale forecast by volume and skill set.

External:

  • Development and management of relationships at all levels within a client’s company to support the successful delivery of services and the securing of future work.
  • Attend key industry workshops and inputting to standards updates.

Qualifications:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience:

  • Chartered Engineer with a degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth understanding of the principles of railway vehicle dynamics.
  • Has previous experience leading on large vehicle dynamics related projects which requires an understanding of the rolling stock history (including any vehicle changes which may not have been accounted for), an understanding of the requirements of Railway Group Standards including how the requirements change for different rolling stock types.
  • The ability to present the principles of vehicle dynamics to the industry, clients and colleagues in a clear and concise manner such that non-specialist can make informed decisions on the most appropriate actions.
  • Proficient user of software such as Vampire, SIMPACK, Matlab.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, write and communicate in a language additional to English is advantageous.

Work Environment:

  • AtkinsRéalis Rail & Transit performs its business within open plan offices and operates a no smoking policy.
  • Will be required to visit railway workshops/depots on occasion and must comply with local procedures and safety arrangements. May be required to work under Network Rail (or equivalent) Personal Track Safety Certification.
  • Will be required from time to time to visit client premises both in the U.K. and overseas and present on findings from dynamic analysis. Will be required to comply with local safety procedures and AtkinsRéalis protocols.
