Project Manager, New Build Strategies

As part of the global efforts to reach net zero emissions, Nuclear Canada is striving to be a leader in new nuclear builds, through deployment of CANDU reactors, and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The Project Manager (PM) will report to the Director, New Build Strategies & Capture, and will be responsible for the execution of various initiatives and projects that are critical to successful deployment of new nuclear builds. This role will require leadership of all project team members, including engineering, procurement, project management, construction, and includes interfacing with key internal and external stakeholders including our client and partner organizations. The PM is expected to have sound experience in project delivery and project execution methodology including an understanding of engineering, procurement, construction, contract management and project controls principles. The individual’s excellent interpersonal skills drive the primary responsibility to maintain positive professional interface relationships with internal and external stakeholders, both client and partner organizations.

The individual will be responsible for the delivery of the full project lifecycle with an initial focus on early works and Definition Phase activities, making contributions to the balance of proposal activities and client negotiations to set the project on a path to success. On a routine basis, the PM is responsible for project reporting, effective implementation and oversight of project governance and procedures, progress toward milestones, stakeholder management, realization of project goals, assignment of or recruitment of project team members, development of overall work breakdown structure (WBS), project deliverables, organizational chart, budget, schedule, subcontract and supplier strategy, risk management, project forecast and people forecasting and levelling (PFL) for the project.

This role will be based in Pickering, ON.

Your role will within the team:

  • The Project Manager shall lead the project organization, through day-to-day exhibition of AtkinsRéalis core values.
  • Working closely with Director, New Build Strategies and Capture, the Project Manager shall strategically plan, develop, then execute projects to achieve strategic objectives of the organization. This may include customer driven, or internally funded, feasibility studies, consulting assignments, early project works, and other tasks that contribute to the new nuclear team’s overall goals.
  • Accountable for all aspects of one or more projects within the mandate and to lead all team members who are performing duties to ensure that the work progresses with safety, quality, schedule, cost, and contractual requirements.
  • Responsible for developing project scope and deliverable definition, WBS, project estimates in compliance with the governing contract documents, quality requirements for the project and any additional customer requirements.
  • Responsible for developing all scopes and deliverable definitions in compliance with the strategic plan.
  • Responsible for all contract development, negotiations, including scope & change control, requirements management, subcontractor and supplier management and governance for any flow-down requirements from the parent contract to subs and vendors.
  • Where applicable, the Project Manager is responsible and accountable for all aspects of nuclear and industrial safety including adherence with corporate and customer safety programs, development and enforcement of necessary training and requirements, adherence to corrective action programs and enforcement of performance standards for all the above.
  • Responsible for applying appropriate key performance indicators to monitor project health and performance and establish rigorous reporting protocols that meet all requirements of the contract, corporate standards and project-specific oversight as established by senior management or customer.
  • Ensure that all project activities are performed in accordance with corporate standards of ethical compliance, cyber-security, import-export regulations, intellectual property protections and security clearance protocols.
  • Ensure that project procurement and subcontract management including subcontractor and supplier oversight, invoicing, accruals and supply chain strategies are aligned with risk management, quality requirements, schedule and budget considerations and overall performance standards commensurate with the project and customer requirements.
  • Apply project controls methodology with respect to planning and scheduling, baseline management, cost control, budgeting, cashflow, invoicing, cost and revenue forecasting and resource management.
  • Develop and implement detailed project execution plans and monitoring their execution through comprehensive reporting to clients and senior management.
  • Perform rigorous risk analysis in accordance with corporate standards and application of industry best practice including Montecarlo methodology and contingency draw-down curves.
  • Makes effective decision/recommendation (or responsible for) with respect to resourcing requirements on the project.
  • Responsible for approving hours of work (e.g. timesheet approvals, overtime approvals, vacation authorization) for assigned scope/project in accordance with company policies, project policies and any applicable collective agreements.

  • Responsible for supporting the proposal process: drive proposal deadlines, championing proposals with the client and through internal review processes.

  • 10+ years’ experience supporting various type of projects including construction, manufacturing, or engineering services projects.
  • 3+ years’ experience leading individuals and teams.
  • Experience in managing complex, interdependent Primavera-6 project schedules.
  • Experience in complex Joint Venture, consortium, or Integrated Project Delivery models is a considerable asset.
  • Strategic planning and execution experience.
  • Understanding of large EPC work including subcontracts, prime contract management.
  • Ability to understand, plan, and execute in alignment with the overall business unit’s strategies and needs.
  • A servant leader who can inspire a team to perform and work together towards a common goal.
  • Lead by example and set high standards for Health & Safety and Nuclear Safety Culture.
  • An appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry.
  • Understanding of project delivery methodology including earned value, critical path scheduling, prime contract and subcontract management, procurement and supply chain methodology and construction work packaging and associated inspection and test plans.
  • Proven ability to innovate within the course of executing a project.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions using a variety of tools.
  • Working Knowledge of industrial safety and nuclear safety culture.
  • New Build engineering and construction project experience is a considerable asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset.
  • Front End Engineering Design experience is a considerable asset.
  • BSc in Engineering or equivalent is an asset.
  • International project experience is an asset.
