We need a Nuclear Regulation & Licensing Engineer who wants to play an effective role in in a range of projects, which will both assure the integrity of existing UK nuclear infrastructure and support the delivery of a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. In addition to this, the Engineer will be expected to deliver innovative consultancy advice to core clients, critical to the success of the UK’s energy market.
Does this sound like you? In which case, we’d love you to apply for this role.
The role
Working within our Energy business in Bristol, you will be in a unique position of being able to offer full concept through to detail design capability across some fantastic, inspirational projects. From our office we are involved in developing innovative, practical solutions for our clients across the UK and further afield. By joining the vibrant Energy Business, you will have the opportunity to work across the whole nuclear market from Decommissioning to Generation to New Build, and including the defence nuclear programme under the UK’s Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator and UK MOD Authorisation.
The role will entail providing advice on nuclear regulatory expectations and requirements during the design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the production of appropriate documentation as part of the Site Licence and/or Authorisation Conditions. Typical documents you will be expected to produce, and areas where you will provide expert advice, may include the following:
• Site Licence Applications, including
• Safety Management Prospectus
• Nuclear Baseline organisational documentation (under Licence/Authorisation Condition 36);
• Licence/Authorisation Condition Compliance arrangements;
• Internal Regulatory processes, guidance and advice;
• Regulatory interface arrangements, with either or both of the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator as appropriate;
• Organisational capability analyses;
• Advice and analysis on Leadership and Management for Safety capabilities;
• Briefing and advice notes to senior staff, including up to Board level.
The person
You’ll be happy to work with customers and with teams who deliver to their customers and you’ll be adaptable and able to cope with uncertainty. As soon as you’re presented with a problem, you are focused on how to resolve it, whatever it might be, with an understanding of how the regulatory context affects a client’s needs. You pay attention to detail without losing sight of the bigger picture, and can make sound decisions when under pressure; you are comfortable in reaching conclusions based on limited information.
You don’t just tackle these things alone. You enjoy discussing how to meet the client’s requirements with your colleagues. And overall, you get satisfaction from building relationships, with clients and with colleagues. You enjoy getting to know people, and working out how you can have a positive impact on them – whether delivering something for a client, or helping to win more work. You understand how it is people that deliver safety and success, and how leadership and management are key influencers in that.
In addition to having excellent communication and problem-solving skills you will be able to demonstrate the following:
Essential requirements
• An Engineering degree or equivalent level of expertise developed through an appropriate training route and breadth of professional experience
• Chartered Engineer status, or equivalent previous experience and responsibility
• Demonstrable understanding of the UK’s nuclear regulatory framework for either the UK civil or the UK defence nuclear industries
• Strong relationship building skills, including being comfortable with giving and receiving advice at all levels within a client’s business, from those delivering operations to senior management at up to Board executive levels,
Desirable Requirements
• Understanding and experience of nuclear plant operations, either in the civil or defence arenas
• Experience of nuclear regulation in an internal regulatory or internal assurance capacity
• Awareness of the inter-actions between nuclear safety regulation and nuclear environmental regulation
The team
Our team has a key role to play in the UK’s Nuclear business, covering nuclear systems from concept feasibility through to design delivery. With relationships across this market, we bring technical know-how from across the design lifecycle to help solve our client’s problems. We see integrated design services as a growth area and with our links into the Atkins organisation for e.g. Defence, we form part of a wider business which gives us unrivalled access to significant players in all parts of the civil and defence industries offering diversity and opportunity.
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
If applying to this role please do not make reference to (in conversation) or include in your application or CV, details of any current or previously held security clearance.
