Southern Renewal Enterprise:

The Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE) is accountable for the Southern Regions renewals programme (CP7 & CP8) and through collective expertise will develop, mobilise and deliver a £9 billion programme between 2024 – 2034.

Southern Integrated Delivery (SID), which forms part of the SRE, is a fully integrated commercial partnership between AtkinsRéalis, Network Rail, Octavius, VolkerFitzpatrick and VolkerRail and through our collective strength, capability and knowledge we will own and deliver the renewals programme. Together we achieve and share in success.

Note: This role is posted UK wide however the incumbent is required to be based at Puddle Dock, Central London 2-3 days per week.

Job Purpose:

The Environmental & Sustainability Director role is responsible for creating, developing, and implementing an industry-leading approach to Environmental & Sustainability management for the Southern Regions renewals portfolio. In addition, it will have effective oversight and coordination of the functional Environmental & Sustainability activities. The role is a member of the Leadership Team and will report into the SID Director. It will be required to operate in a matrix management structure coordinating the activities of the SID partners and existing individuals from the current Network Rail structure.

  • Providing the leadership and management of the Environmental & Sustainability function of the £1bn per annum Alliance.
  • Ensuring all actions, decisions and behaviours across the portfolio are consistent with best for portfolio and aligned to the SID charter.
  • Responsible for creating and implementing the E&S strategy for the entire SID alliance and the ecosystem along with clear and auditable policies and procedures that comply with the relevant laws, regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Responsible for leading incident investigations, root cause analysis and identifying corrective measures to prevent future occurrences.
  • Drives & champions the E&S performance of the SID partners, continuously reviewing and updating the approach to meet industry best practice and latest thinking.
  • Establishing an environmental & sustainable conscious culture SID wide by promoting awareness and provision of training.
  • Provides advice and guidance on Environmental & Sustainability matters to the SID Director and SET.
  • Maintains accurate records and data on E&S performance.
  • Leads engagement on Environmental & Sustainability matters with the Capable Owner, Network Rail and the ORR on matters specific to the Alliance.

Key Deliverables:

  • Deliver a demonstrable reduction in whole life carbon across the portfolio of works to achieve the annual % reduction required by the contractual KPIs.
  • Identify the resources required to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain including the business case requirements where third party land is required.
  • Implement a regional approach to legacy through the SID social value team to incorporate partnership working and long-term relationships with strategic partners to achieve the positive legacy outcome.
  • Work with the Ecosystem and procurement function to develop a holistic understanding of our approach to sustainability, creating the sustainable leadership within our supply chain.
  • Ensure the use of new technology and innovation is implemented through a best for portfolio approach across the SID partners.
  • Identify industry trends, opportunities and conversely potential risks to achieving the target performance with he implementation of mitigation across operations and functions within the SID.
  • Identify how the sustainability team and our "outcomes" can support and drive the target control period efficiencies required by the ORR.

  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Build strong relationships and working collaboratively with colleagues across the enterprise.
  • Resilience and Persistence: Resilience and persistent in the face of challenges, maintaining focus on long-term objectives.
  • Ethical Conduct: Demonstrate honesty, fairness, and transparency in actions and decisions.

Experience and knowledge:

  • Experienced in delivering a high-performing collaborative culture in programme delivery environments during mobilisation phases.
  • Successful track record of delivering and managing Environmental & Sustainability activities in major multi-million-pound infrastructure projects in a leadership role.
  • Experienced in programme Environmental & Sustainability strategic and tactical planning, able to set standards, provide guidance, and monitor achievement of the standards.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex issues skillfully, strong problem-solving skills, with an ability to identify solutions to complex issues.
  • Significant experience and specialist knowledge of ensuring safety in the railway and infrastructure environments.
  • Well-developed leadership, communication, negotiating, influencing and interpersonal Environmental & Sustainability Director skills, with the drive and commitment to achieve programme wide objectives.
  • Client and supply chain programme leadership experience.

Qualifications:

  • Industry relevant qualifications /notable industry experience.
  • Member of a recognised environmental body (IEMA, IEEM, CIWEM).
