Our characterisation team provide specialist support to many projects, ensuring that wastes are fully characterised prior to any project starting. We cover the physical, radiological and chemical characterisation of materials to identify suitable disposal and packaging options for projects to enable the swift management of waste items. This function is critical to ensuring wastes are managed and disposed of compliantly. We also provide activity assessment capabilities to projects with the development and implementation of instrumentation and computer modelling. A characterisation role specialist is a varied role covering multiple technical specialisms, including waste and radiation protection.

Our radiation protection offering is both diverse and challenging. We support clients across their project lifecycles from feasibility assessment and concept design through to active commissioning and operation, in positions from an external consultant to integrated project support on licensed sites. Our primary focus in the field of decommissioning requires both a collaborative and innovative attitude and approach from the outset, ensuring a proportionate application of the Ionising Radiations Regulations to projects which often only span a brief period.

Engineering management is the focal point for delivery of engineering design within our projects, co-ordinating the technical solution to satisfy client requirements, legislation and standards and ensuring it can be delivered to cost and schedule. In this cross-discipline role, people and leadership skills coupled with financial and commercial acumen are as important as technical knowledge. Engineering management covers the full lifecycle of project delivery and needs to consider how the design will be manufactured, constructed, commissioned, operated, maintained and finally decommissioned.

Civil and structural engineering provides the underpinning for all other engineering disciplines to build upon – without the buildings and infrastructure, we would be engineering in a field and trying to fix equipment into thin air! Join an EC&I team that has the capability to undertake a client concept through its full lifecycle including specification preparation, front end engineering, detailed design, installation and commissioning. The EC&I field is diverse which results in a team with skills across the whole field of EC&I within our department. We work closely with the other disciplines to ensure the final deliverable / product to the client meets their expectations.

A relatively new venture for us, you will join a team that explores the “art of the possible” and provides solutions which help others to maximise their contribution. This small team develops new bespoke software and identifies enhancements to commercially available software to enable our teams to deliver more efficiently and effectively. We are also providing industry leading solutions to enable our clients to manage their information more effectively, which is driving significant change in how projects are delivered.

The environment team at Westlakes sits within the decommissioning services team. We are a dedicated team of environmental specialists who have experience in relation to environmental aspects of the nuclear industry, radioactive waste management and radioactivity in the environment. We support the activities of the decommissioning services team, projects within the wider Atkins business and a range of clients. We understand the regulation and legislation requirements of nuclear licenced sites and support clients in complying with their conditions for their permitting and licensing requirements. We ensure that environmental requirements of operational projects are managed including supporting the production of various documentation such as environmental safety cases and BAT assessments. We also work closely with other environmental teams within the wider Atkins businesses including ecologists, hydrogeologists and contaminated land specialists.

Joining the construction team for the implementation of CDM principles and practices to ensure and maintain compliance to nuclear site licence standards of project delivery through command, control and supervision. collaboration and co-ordination of the decommissioning delivery program designers for mechanical, civil, structural and architectural to include electrical, control and instrumentation.

You will also play a leading role in interfacing with clients, joint venture partners and sub-contractors. As a project manager you will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered to cost, schedule and quality.

The project control team is an integral part of any project. The team is actively involved right from day one, assisting in creating a tender programme and estimate of costs. Working within the team, you will be assisting in building these programmes/estimates and then following these up on a regular basis to ensure progress is recorded and costs recovered. This often means being embedded as part of the client’s project team working collaboratively with not just them but our joint venture partners. This can be a demanding role but also rewarding as you develop your career within the project controls discipline.

You will be an integral part of a team providing quality assurance and quality control services to a range of diverse projects. You will interface with customers and supply chain in ensuring services and products are delivered to the requisite customer and international standards and specifications. You will be responsible for providing quality support across the full project lifecycle from design through to installation and commissioning
