Insights Top tips to kick off your project management career in Singapore
The role of a project manager is vital on a construction project.
Project managers are responsible for delivering success by supervising the planning and execution of a scheme, aiming to stay on time, within budget, and to the specified quality standards, whilst continuously keeping an open dialogue with clients.
At AtkinsRéalis, we have been designing, managing, and delivering some of the most complex projects around the world for over a century. In Singapore, we have a strong presence and a growing number of project management opportunities available within our Faithful+Gould business. As integrated project and programme management experts, we support clients with the management of varying construction projects on the island. If you’re looking for a new project management career in Singapore, here are our top tips to progress:
Be dynamic
Singapore is a thriving global financial hub and is known for its clean streets and contemporary attitude. To succeed as a project manager in Singapore, you’ll need to be dynamic and energetic to motivate your teams to continue enhancing Singapore’s unique charm.
Singapore is an exciting place to work as a project manager. It boasts an optimistic approach towards sustainability and digitalisation. Although the construction industry has yet to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels, several major public sector projects are expected to stimulate growth and recovery in the coming years. In fact, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) that estimate projected demand from 2023 to 2026 will be between $25 billion and $32 billion a year. Part of this will involve harnessing technological opportunities and using digital to deliver more efficient and sustainable development.
Be passionate
As a project manager, you’ll oversee the most important aspects of a project, from start to finish, and you’ll also be responsible for fostering positive working relations with key stakeholders. Showing passion for your role and the project you’re working on is a great way to motivate the people around you, and it’s a key characteristic shown in a good project manager. You may, for example, be focused on delivering sustainable project management, applying problem-solving to some of our more pressing challenges or helping to create a better environment for the species that live within it.
Our Project Managers are passionate about establishing sustainable solutions in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, and delivering value for not only our clients, but society too, whilst also creating a positive employee experience.
Be agile and organised
Being agile in the face of change is an important attribute of a successful project manager and time management and cost forecasting are key. Inevitably, circumstances may change during the lifecycle of a construction project, so you’ll need to be organised and able to think on your feet. This could be due to unpredictable or extreme weather patterns, personnel changes, or unprecedented global issues like the COVID-19 outbreak. Back in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, project managers were required to show agility and were driven to navigate challenges when projects were paused, supply chains halted, and social distancing and furlough schemes were enforced.
Climate change can also cause a real threat to the successful delivery of construction projects. Unpredictable weather events can endanger time and budget management as we are seeing increased rainfall, especially, in the APAC region. Project managers in Singapore must therefore allow for contingencies related to weather in their planning to avoid costly problems.
Be sustainable
Within AtkinsRéalis, we promote sustainability in all that we do, incorporating environmentally responsible processes to ensure we leave a positive legacy on the planet. Our project managers ensure teams of engineers, architects and labourers use sustainable methods because ultimately, they genuinely want to ensure our planet is a safe place for future generations to enjoy.
AtkinsRéalis has been contributing to economic, social, and environmental development to improve life for Asia’s communities since 1964. Singapore is one of the most sustainable and green cities in Asia and, we are proud of our project managers at AtkinsRéalis who want to preserve this title.
