Our practice
Our practice helps to manage and optimise tomorrow’s transport infrastructure, by helping our clients make the right decisions to best realise their development goals. We influence what the future of transport will look like by providing trusted advice, strategic direction and assured delivery to our clients. We specialise in solving the most challenging issues across our five specialist teams: digital roads, transport technology advisory, intelligent transport operations, safety behaviours and research, and emerging mobility.
Our pillars
Heading
Digital Smart Roads
Our focus is on smart systems for ensuring the smooth operation of the network, primarily on strategic roads. We provide consultancy advice on all aspects from research and development through to operation. We have extensive experience in a wide range of systems and technologies including smart motorways, digital roads, ramp metering, traffic detection, stopped vehicle detection, enforcement, and severe weather. We also have significant expertise in connected and automated vehicles and advise clients on how they can prepare for and benefit from future innovations in this fast-paced environment. Our services include: research & development; feasibility studies; business case; procurement; strategy & policy; systems engineering; pilots & trials; monitoring & evaluation; complex data analysis; problem investigation & technical assurance; technology specifications & documents; site selection, system commissioning & calibration.
Transport Technology Advisory
The Transport Technology Advisory pillar offers market-leading transport technology consultancy, delivering projects that focus on solving key issues for clients through innovation and technical excellence whilst pursuing opportunities for us to help shape the future of intelligent mobility. The TTA pillar provides strategic and technical advice to numerous Local Authorities, National Highways and Transport Bodies including DfT. We foster a highly collaborative approach, working closely with clients, stakeholders and the supply chain to provide technology based solutions to transport issues. Through a broad range of projects and our support of AtkinsRéalis framework contracts, we offer thought leadership, project and programme delivery over a range of technologies including traffic signals and control systems, UTMC and data driven network management, intelligent transport systems, connected vehicles, public transport technology including real time passenger information and smart ticketing. Our ‘whole-life’ consultancy approach reflects our people, their capabilities and the breadth of relationships we have across the technology landscape meaning we can offer trusted support to clients covering policy and strategy development, discovery and design through to specification, procurement support and contract delivery.
Intelligent Transport Operations
Intelligent Transport Operations has a focus on the operation of Transport Systems thoughout the UK, Europe and Middle East. It has a wide encompassing net covering the intelligent management of traffic, charging, enforcement of roads, bridges, tunnels, city cordons and HGV/Truck monitoring. The technologies working in partnership with transport infrastructure and vehicles, result in improvements only to not travel times and much needed authority revenue, but safety, network efficiency, information provision, environmental management, integration, accessibility and public perception. Our projects have covered not only schemes in the UK and Ireland but other challenging areas of the Middle East and Eastern European countries which require different approaches to transportation and control.
Safety Behaviours and Research
When our clients are developing their transport strategy, infrastructure, processes and policies, they want to be sure that it is fit for future customers and safe for those who use and operate it. We support our clients through the process of developing, new and innovative solutions, for their customers which are often on their most complex and challenging projects. We help our clients to tackle the difficult decisions and obtain deliverable improvements. We put people's needs at the heart of our thinking using a blend of behavioural science, human centred design, operational knowledge and safety risk expertise to provide advice and challenge our clients to find solutions that are fit for purpose. Consequently, our team gets involved in a wide range of projects including standards development, trials, research and pilots across an array of different transportation topics including e-bikes schemes, vehicle detection, active travel, traffic officer procedures, major highway schemes, mobility as a service and the next iteration of smart roads.

Emerging Mobility
The Emerging Mobility pillar has an end-user and outcome-focused approach to connecting people, places and services. This is achieved through reimagining infrastructure across all transport modes, enabled by data, technology and innovative ideas. It will transform people’s journeys and the movement of goods, whilst increasing the efficiency, sustainability and safety of our transport systems and cities worldwide.
Net zero
Climate Change is a critical issue around the globe and spans all sectors. Even within transport, which generates more emissions than any other energy-using sector, there are many parts to the puzzle. At AtkinsRéalis, we believe that collaboration is key to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. We bring cross-sector expertise and a deep understanding of the connections and considerations that need to be made.
Our Net Zero Advisory team works across all modes of transportation, providing strategic advice and supporting our clients on their pathway to Net Zero. We help our clients understand the scale of the challenge and develop clear baselines. We explore carbon reduction options from our toolkit of measures, identify appropriate routemaps and deliver the identified solutions, drawing on expertise from colleagues in the wider business. We work collaboratively with clients and stakeholders throughout, empowering and enabling them to fulfil their potential.
