Are you stuck at a company with no real opportunity or variety as a Civil CAD Designer?  AtkinsRealis is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Civil CAD Designer to join the Alexandria, VA Civil Engineering Group.  Our Civil CAD Designers do it all – grading, site plans, roads, utilities, stormwater.  They work on local, state, and federal projects that include small, medium and large planning, design-bid-build, and design-build projects.  Our Civil CAD Designers work on, and may travel to, federal projects throughout the US, as well as Europe and the Middle East.  They also work with other civil engineering groups in numerous offices across the US.  Come join AtkinsRealis, where opportunities abound.

Our Alexandria office works on a variety of exciting projects for Federal agencies such as the Department of Defense (Navy, US Army Corps of Engineers, Air Force, Marine Corps, National Guard), National Park Service, Dept of Energy, and the National Institutes of Health; state agencies such as Maryland Transit Administration, WMATA, NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority; local municipalities including the City of Baltimore, Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Henrico County; plus many more.

How will you contribute to the team?

  • Uses CAD system to enter the required data, such as precise measurements and commands, in order to generate construction drawings, renderings, report graphics and other digital images.
  • Prepares complex layouts, drawings, and designs from written or verbal specifications or from rough or detailed sketches and/or drawings made by technicians, designers or technical professionals, converting paper documents into computerized file.
  • Produces various design options on the screen or in hard copy, following a designer's or technical professional's verbal instructions or ideas to assist in resolving a design concept not yet completely defined.
  • Uses CAD to redesign, modify, or otherwise edit existing design.
  • Makes minor mathematical calculations.
  • Checks final drawing to verify completeness, clarity and accuracy of drawing.
  • Operates plotter to transfer developed drawings to an appropriate medium.
  • May diagnose and correct equipment problems and assist in training lower-level technicians and/or other personnel wishing to learn to operate CAD equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance in troubleshooting CAD equipment and assist in training inexperienced CAD personnel.
  • Assist, maintain, and develop Office Wide and/or Group CAD Standards.
  • Performs such other duties as the Supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

Special Skills

  • Proficient in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation. 
  • Experience with 3D modeling with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation (grading, pipe networks, corridors, in-roads/open-roads, etc.).
  • Ability to prepare civil engineering projects consisting of construction plans, specifications, and/or design calculations.
  • Experience with roadways, sanitary sewers, water distribution systems, storm drain facilities, site grading, stormwater management, earthwork, erosion & sediment control, environmental compliance, ADA compliance, and/or pavement markings & signage.
  • Local experience working in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
  • Federal project experience not required but a plus.
  • Good math skills required.
  • Experience with coordinating directly and/or attending Client meetings/conference calls.
  • Networking and collaboration.
  • Ability to deliver on time to meet project deadlines.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus eight years related experience, OR
  • Associate degree in a related technical field plus six years related experience.
