Job Title: Construction Manager- UK

Reporting to: Operations Director- UK

Location: Stoke or Birmingham

Overview:

Responsible and accountable for all Construction activities within the project portfolio of Linxon UK such as site management and site support, civil works, electrical and mechanical installation works, quantity surveying and commissioning. Ensure construction activities are executed in accordance with local laws and regulations and company procedures. Ensure construction activities are fulfilling contract specifications, quality standards, health, safety & environment requirements, and that they meet project targets as per individual project key budgets and other milestones as discussed and agreed with respective Project Managers.

What will you do?

  • Lead the construction activity overseeing site management, civil project management, quantity surveying, civil site engineering, site support and commissioning. Ensure that strategic direction is fully understood and applied to the scope of supply.
  • Coordinate with the Hub Operations Manager and functional peers in Linxon UK Operations.
  • Provide strategic and operational guidance and serve as an escalation point for individual and systemic construction issues within the organization.
  • Determine the advantages and disadvantages and relative costs of alternative construction design concepts and establish baseline preferred concepts and methods. Develop an internal estimating database to quote site works.
  • Leads constructability workshops during tender phase and at start of execution.
  • Manage the planning and control process in the Construction team. Hold regular reviews to ensure that the teams are delivering work to both the customer's and Linxon’s requirements.
  • Ensure highest quality of construction outputs in line with project timelines and construction requirements, to avoid re-work and cost of poor quality.
  • Develop and maintain beneficial relationships with external and internal organizations e.g. key construction subcontractors, suppliers and professional societies to gather and share best practice and to enhance the reputation and credibility of Linxon.
  • Develop, implement and improve relevant processes - aligned with Company policies - to improve efficiency and effectiveness across the construction function.
  • Facilitates the Contract Management function, ensuring appropriate support to the tendering function to agree on favorable T&Cs during tender stage, and ensuring adequate support to the PM during project execution to manage the contract with the customer. Supports flow down of T&Cs from the main contract to key construction subcontractors.
  • Facilitates tendering activities with functional input, ensuring that tenders have a clear, optimized and realistic project construction execution strategy, and the correct costing and risk & contingency provisions are being used. Verifies and confirms available construction capacity to execute projects after award.
  • Facilitates the Supply Chain function to ensure the best construction subcontractor and supplier portfolio is selected providing feedback on key construction subcontractor and supplier project performance to enable SCM to better manage the supply chain.
  • Manages key external construction stakeholder relationships including at senior level within the customer base, representing Linxon with professionalism and building strong connections based on trust and mutual respect.
  • Supports Hub and global functional managers to continuously improve and further develop construction processes and tools.
  • Manages construction resource planning for the full project portfolio and ensures that this is regularly updated in line with ongoing and expected projects and tenders and incorporated into the full resource planning managed by the Operations Director.
  • Actively works with project managers, operations and commercial teams in the management of project claims related to construction. Serves as an escalation point in construction claims negotiations and endeavors to ensure these are resolved in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Validates and supports that adequate HSE measures are taken in construction activities and that an HSE culture is implemented and maintained in the organization.
  • Facilitates Human Resources in deploying HR policies within the Construction team ensuring that performance appraisals are completed, supports recruitment activities, advises on remuneration packages to attract new employees, supports retention policies including career planning and training, promotes internally Linxon policies on employee welfare and promotes Linxon externally as an attractive employer for new entrants.
  • Supports Linxon entry into adjacent segment and geographical markets and provides support to other Linxon entities within the EMEA Hub as directed by the Hub Operations and Manager

Skills Required:

  • Lead your projects with great confidence – and you have the character to stand straight in good times and bad times alike.
  • Sharp negotiator, with an excellent ability to resolve issues, lead teams and work constructively with customer relations.
  • Take the initiative and apply both creativity and perseverance in negotiations, always within compliance of Linxon’s Code of Conduct.
  • Stay calm under pressure, even if unforeseen events threaten to disrupt your projects.
  • Strong presentation skills for both internal executive and external customer facing meetings
  • Solid business and commercial mindset.
  • Your experience evaluation will be based on the particulars of executed construction projects, such as complexity, duration; contract amounts, project outcome, etc. so please include that information in your application.

Formal Education and Training Required:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent in civil engineering and/or construction management.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in civil construction management preferably in high voltage power systems / substation business and within an EPC organization structure.
  • Executed successfully construction projects (10 MUSD+) as a Construction Manager.
  • Sound knowledge of contract management within high voltage transmission businesses.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Deep understanding of full life cycle of large and complex turnkey construction projects involving multiple disciplines, starting from opportunity identification to project close out.
  • Experience in dealing with Utility and Renewable Energy developers an advantage.
  • Sound knowledge and demonstrable experience of the UK civil construction market a prerequisite.
  • Proven experience in people management.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Pragmatic approach and persistence in continuous development.
