The Strategic Highways (SH) Market sits at the heart of our aspiration to shape the future of transportation. The Delivery Performance Director is a new role that has been introduced to bridge the gap between the project delivery teams and the client facing teams in the market, ensuring that the delivery of our design portfolios is both client focused and optimised. The SH market, part of the wider Transportation Division, is significant with a substantial annual revenue that has grown over recent years as our portfolio has diversified.
The market spans a diverse range of projects across the UK, whether working direct for the UK’s national transport bodies or for Contractors delivering schemes for them. Our portfolio ranges from providing design and advice for national major projects to highways asset services and renewals, whilst our data and technology services are growing rapidly, and management and technical consultancy remains a significant and growing part of the business. You will be a core member of the Market’s leadership team.
The Delivery Performance Director will focus on engineering design and supervision for major projects and renewals primarily, but not exclusively, for National Highways. Your focus will be to maintain and enhance performance at portfolio level in order to enhance our reputation with clients, ensuring both project quality and effective communication. This needs to be undertaken through the Project Directors and Project Managers who are responsible for the delivery of your own projects.
The role will also be responsible for providing leadership on one or more of the major framework and project bids in the pipeline, and with this in mind a key aspect of the role will be identifying areas for delivery improvement and then implementing them across the portfolio.
As a member of the Transportation Senior Leadership Team, be an ambassador for the business; attending and speaking at relevant industry events, developing alliances and partnerships and generally leveraging opportunities to build greater awareness of AtkinsRéalis and improve our standing and reputation.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Market Director you will:
- Work with Project Directors and Project Managers to oversee portfolios of projects in the market with an objective to deliver all projects on time and within budget while exceeding client expectations.
- Work alongside the Client Director for National Highways Major Projects and other Client Directors as needs are identified to raise our profile with clients, enhance our reputation for delivery and identify new opportunities.
- Identify and manage portfolio risks and opportunities, working closely with the Market’s Operations Director.
- Take on a leading role to win major framework and/or project bids.
- Develop and lead on selected client relationships as the market seeks to expand its client base and open up new areas of revenue.
- Undertake key client facing roles on projects or frameworks.
- Be a proactive member of the Market Leadership Team, collaborating with others in the team, and taking on cross-market responsibilities as required.
- Be an advocate and role model for out corporate values, ethics and governance guidelines.
Requirements:
- Educated to degree standard or equivalent; relevant professional qualification.
- Successful track record of delivering portfolios of projects and frameworks in the highways market.
- Known and respected in the highways market at a senior level with our clients and likely to have at least 20 years’ relevant experience.
- Demonstrable client skills and a network of contacts in National Highways and Contractors essential.
- Knowledge and experience of working with one or more of the national highways authorities in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland desirable.
- Demonstrable experience of work winning, identifying opportunities and successfully bidding them
- Experience in financial and commercial management.
- Contractual, commercial and project delivery knowledge, including large and complex design projects and with experience of working with contractors.
- A well-rounded leadership and management background with demonstrable experience of project portfolio management.
- Ability to successfully operate on Management Boards and as required Joint Venture Boards.

The role is available for flexible, including part-time, working subject to agreement with the SH Market Director on the exact responsibilities.
