The Substation Electrical Engineer is required to work within a multi-discipline team to develop design packages and major equipment specification for high voltage substations and distribution network. You will coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. You will also assist the estimating team in preparation of conceptual designs, estimates and project proposals.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position is accountable to provide all substation design, major equipment specification and ordering activities in accordance with applicable Codes and Standards, including all of AtkinsRéalis policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Prepare conceptual to detail Design of the complex projects.
  • Develop high voltage substation site and bus work layouts, ground grid drawings, plot plans and elevation drawings for outdoor high voltage substation equipment.
  • Develop Switchgear room and Control room layout drawings for high voltage substation projects.
  • Develop underground cable routing, conduit and trench plan layout and sections for high voltage substation and distribution network.
  • Perform design calculation/studies including cable pulling, photometric study, battery charger sizing, voltage drop and station service.
  • Perform estimates using data from the utility material database.
  • Develop technical specifications, drawings, and standards of equipment/projects.
  • Prepare Power Single Line Diagram, Relay and Metering One-line diagram.
  • Prepare AC/DC three-line diagram, Elementary Schematics and Wiring diagrams.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials and Cable Schedules.
  • Prepare the design basis memorandum and detailed engineering scope and guide the assigned discipline engineers to align the engineering deliverables according to project requirements
  • Develop specification and performing bid evaluation of substation equipment including transformers, reactors, cap bank, circuit breakers, switchgears, instrument transformers, surge arresters and switches for MV, HV and EHV substations.
  • Review of type and routine test reports of substation equipment and provide expertise in selection of substation EHV/HV/MV equipment.
  • Review and ensure that vendor design meet industry standards and clients specifications and meet the project scope and requirements.
  • Review of internal and external substation equipment engineering for code compliance, and good engineering practice.
  • Work closely with peers and other discipline designers to ensure accurate delivery that will meet utility Standards, industry standards and meet good engineering practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Review technical qualification of vendors for the provision of materials and services used on projects.
  • Maintain complete project documentation with respect to all design packages.
  • Maintain good working relationship with internal groups that support the project.

What will you contribute?

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Institution.
  • 3-7 years experience in the field of high voltage transmission and Distribution substation.
  • Good knowledge of North American codes and standards such as CSA, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, ProjectWise and Electronic Document Management Systems is a must.
  • Preferred experience in high voltage substation design and Standards.
  • Strong knowledge of grounding and lightning shielding system, rigid and strain bus calculations.
  • Experience in sizing of major equipment and selection of high voltage substation material.
  • A Professional Engineer registered (or eligible for registration) with APEGA (Alberta) or EGBC (British Columbia).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
