Purpose of Role

What: Working within the Atkins Transportation Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) team supporting the Transportation business through the delivery of an effective Environment and Sustainability function from both a strategic and tactical perspective.

Why: Promotion of the Environment and Sustainability agenda, ensuring clear demonstration of continuous improvement and consistent and efficient use of resource. To support the delivery of all projects, working closely with key clients such as Network Rail, HS2 and industry bodies.

How: By supporting Atkins Transportation in the delivery of a portfolio of Environment and Sustainability Management bids, projects, programmes and work assignments demonstrating continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities

To provide environmental support and guidance for the Transportation Business Unit (“the BU”) as part of the senior HSE team. This position will lead the continuous improvement of environmental performance across the BU and its projects by implementing Sector and Regional policies and initiatives, ensuring our integrated management system is applied effectively to meet our environmental compliance obligations and embedding relevant best practice.

  • Responsible for implementation and continuous improvement of key environmental management system documentation and architecture to support wider system certification to ISO14001:2015.
  • Support HSE strategic objectives and performance measures to enable the BU to meet its responsibilities for management of key environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Build and manage relationships, internally and externally to improve the reputation of the BU with environmental stakeholders.
  • Provide timely and coherent environment advice and reports across the BU as required, being mindful of the political and reputation risks surrounding transportation’s environmental issues.
  • Responsible for the development of environmental competency and training programmes and direct implementation to support compliance obligations.
  • Oversee the collation and management of all environmental performance evaluation measures such as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for both internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Provide regular performance and technical updates to relevant staff.
  • Responsible for environmental assurance of projects and activities across the BU in accordance with the integrated HSE assurance regime.
  • Investigate and provide technical direction for significant environmental incident occurrences and response across BU projects and activities.
  • Support Environmental Industry forums across relevant sectors.
  • Provide technical leadership in the development and support of environmental bid solutions.

    Qualifications and Experience

  • Currently, or working towards, a Chartered Environmentalist and full membership of a chosen environmental body.
  • Demonstrable experience (~5 years) of project and corporate environmental management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and influencing of stakeholders to achieve change.
  • Excellent understanding of the legislative and political context around transportation issues.
  • Excellent presentation and information management skills.
  • Desirable for a formal auditing qualification for ISO14001:2015.
  • Innovation – be able to suggest, champion and implement innovative solutions for safety both internally within Atkins and externally to key stakeholders.
  • Communication – Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to partner with a wide variety of stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Must be a high-level user of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel.
