HV Cable Engineer

We are seeking a High Voltage cable engineer to join our Power Networks team within our Net Zero Energy Business. This position would be based in Glasgow or Birmingham, with a flexible mixture of home-working and office/site collaboration time expected. We also welcome applicants wishing to work part-time. (Other home office locations such as Epsom or Leeds are also an option).

The UK Energy market is undergoing unprecedented change as the country strives towards a net zero carbon target. The sector must contend with high penetration of modern generation, transmission and distribution technologies, energy storage and prepare for the increased demand associated with the electrification of transport and heat as the countries progresses along the decarbonisation pathway. As part of the Net Zero agenda, networks have a crucial role in delivering the renewable energy which is required to be connected. The transmission network operators have secured c.£8bn as part of the RIIO T2 package.

Your purpose:

  • You will be working in a senior position within our Power Networks team. You will have a strong attention to detail and enjoy ensuring high quality delivery of FEED and detailed design deliverables.
  • You should have a strong awareness of deadlines and have the ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.
  • Building strong and trusted relationships is a key part of this role. You’ll enjoy working with others, sometimes directly at client sites, sometimes from our offices. You’ll be client focused – being able interface with clients, understand their needs and convert opportunities into successful workstreams.

Examples of the types of work you may be involved in:

  • Producing or reviewing the HV cable aspects of different projects including onshore cable projects, offshore export cables and interconnectors.
  • Delivering Concept design, FEED, feasibility and Detailed design projects and bids for clients.
  • Ensuring projects are delivered in accordance with the scope, budget and timescale requirements to the satisfaction of the client.
  • Delivering bids and tenders within tight deadlines as part of a tender team and producing HV cable aspects of technical offers.
  • Attending design reviews and Hazard review meetings and producing HV cable design packages as required.

What you can bring?

In addition to strong communication and leadership skills, key attributes include:

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience.
  • Strong understanding and leadership of the engineering projects through asset lifecycles.
  • Track record in the design, manufacture and testing of HV cables for use in HVAC and HVDC projects.
  • An understanding of IEC cable standards and CIGRE technical policies, its suite of technical specifications and supporting documentation.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

You may also demonstrate a selection of the following desirable requirements:

  • Chartered Engineer through the IET.
  • Experience of Working Groups and Technical committees such as CIGRE and IEEE.
  • Experience of witnessing 3rd party cable activities such as test, installation, transport etc.
