Project Director - Traffic Engineering/Planning

Atkins has been providing infrastructure planning, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture, and program management services to public and private clients across the United States for more than 50 years.
Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Atlanta, GA Department of Transportation Business Unit as a Project Director over Traffic Engineering/Planning. 

 


MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE:
  • Under general direction, manages complex and unconventional technology or delivery systems for conventional transportation and traffic engineering work and broad knowledge of precedents in specialty area. 
  • Projects typically involve high levels of regulatory agency involvement (GDOT, ARC and multiple municipal clients) or very complex technical requirements.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and technical guidance to senior project managers and project managers within assigned area of responsibility (Traffic Engineering/Planning) to ensure that quality management and technical services are provided to clients and that operating performance targets are met.
  • Mentors senior project managers and project managers associated with sophisticated and unconventional projects.

JOB DUTIES:
Generally, project director is tasked with internal staff administration, project production/management, marketing and client maintenance as well as contract/financial management in the discipline of traffic engineering/planning. 
Primary responsibilities would include, but are not limited to, those stated below:
  • Assists management team in identifying staffing needs based on future workload and manpower projections for project staffing.
  • Assists project staff in developing work plans; reviews and approves schedules, budgets, project milestone dates, and work products.  Oversees financial performance of projects; assists project staff in identifying potential problems to ensure remedial actions are promptly taken to avoid financial losses and client dissatisfaction.
  • Develops and recommends operational budgets for approval by senior management. Reviews and makes decision on proposed project budgets. Monitors monthly performance against budget to ensure project profitability
  • On project assignments, understands how to clearly convey the resulting analysis to both team members in other engineering disciplines and clients.  On assignments involving engineering investigations and planning work, has a firm grasp of the fundamentals of engineering processes and their application to operating systems.
  • Conducts contract negotiations with clients and sub-consultants.  Develops and recommends operational budgets for approval by senior management. Reviews and makes decision on proposed project budgets.  Monitors monthly performance against budget to ensure project profitability.
  • Supports Division Manager in developing, implementing, and monitoring annual and strategic marketing plans for Traffic Engineering/Planning; participates in the development of Strategic Plan.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
  • Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

B.S. or M.S. in Engineering.
 
Incumbents typically have fifteen plus years' experience since Bachelor's degree.
 
SPECIAL SKILLS:
 
  • Excellent technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Public speaking and persuasive ability.
  • Very strong financial management, team management, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate efforts of various projects to produce budgeted profits and overall results.
  • Possesses specific expertise to the extent that the individual is regarded as a regional or potentially national expert in a specific discipline, contract delivery method, particular type of project, planning process, design method, or modeling technique.
  • Personal computer proficiency is required.
  • Good technical writing, computer and communications skills.
Preference will be given to candidates that are familiar with and/or have experience with the following:
  • Traffic analysis software (TransModeler, Synchro, HCS, Sidra, VISSIM, CORSIM, etc.) and is familiar with Georgia Department of Transportation procedures and policy guidance
  • Experience in applying regional travel demand models in Cube and/or TransCAD is desirable but not required.
  • Familiarity with big data analysis (AirSage, INRIX, NPMRDS, etc.)

 

 

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS:

P.E. / AICP license is required.
