Project control is an essential part of the project services group that supports project managers through project execution to deliver projects on time and on a budget (as sold). You’ll play a key role in providing project managers with up-to-date cost reporting, assistance in planning and supportive analytics to proactively pinpoint cost overruns, offer potential solutions and/or inquire on mitigation strategies. If you enjoy the challenge of project controls by diving into project budgets, and undertaking analysis (earned value, CPI, trend etc) this position is for you.

The cost controller supports project managers in the control aspects of projects for cost and schedule to accurately report against project budgets. This position reports to the Project Manager of a large infrastructure project in Calgary. The successful candidate will be required to be co-located in Calgary downtown offices 5 days / week.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Manage a full cost control cycle throughout the execution of projects which includes. Setting up projects /mandates, monitoring budgets in the project management-based system against project contractual agreements.
  • Ensure correct calculations of the original budget based on the proposal
  • Keeps track of hours, expenses, costs, and budget updates.
  • Review of expense and invoices, validate in conjunction with other team members where needed.
  • Participating in regular meetings with project managers and other stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure the progress of the project and the achievement of project objectives and results.
  • Ensure follow-up of scope changes and coordination with the project control & Commercial teams.
  • Manage/validate cost allocations related to the purchase of goods and services through the procurement process.
  • Ensure and manage the follow-up of the project progress with discipline managers, including cost and schedule controls.
  • Communicate and interact closely with project managers and other stakeholders regarding all phases of project execution.
  • Follow-up with project managers on regular project forecast updates including periodic assistance in estimating the remaining project costs (ETC), as well as any necessary provisions and risks (analyze WIP, EV, AR, EAC, BAC, etc.).
  • Make corrections to cost forecasts in system according to the directives of the project manager.
  • Document problems related to project budgets and schedules, as well as their resolution.
  • Prepare and transmit to management reports on project performance (monthly, quarterly, and annual), as well as other documents as required by the project.
  • Provide finance team with current reporting period project updates as required.
  • Work in conjunction with adjacent team members – Commercial, Schedule, Estimating etc. to ensure consistent and accurate reporting content and project status alignment.

What will you contribute?

  • 10 years or more of relevant experience in an engineering or construction environment.
  • Proven ability to understand, complex/multi-discipline levels of project planning, scope, schedule, work breakdown structures, cost breakdown structures etc...
  • Understand revenue, cost and profit analysis including budget variance reporting.
  • Knowledge of project control systems (cost and schedule budget setup,).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly proficient in Excel.
  • Proven ability to multi-task.
  • Accountable and responsible.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of cost control platforms (Oracle, Ecosys etc.) required.
  • P. Eng. preferred (any Province).
  • PMP preferred.
  • LRT project experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as Lead of large projects (~$1B) required.
  • Minimum five years of experience on a light rail transit or other major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of contractor side and owner side preferred.
