Atkins has been providing infrastructure planning, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture, and program management services to public and private clients across the United States for more than 50 years.

Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Denver, CO office as a Senior Word Processor.

Under supervision, is responsible for the processing of technical reports, including keying, formatting, and revising text, tables, and figures, according to company standards and style guidelines. May also work on contract documents, technical specifications, and project proposals, and prepare mail merge setup.

Performs a full range of word processing assignments of medium to high complexity, utilizing the software application's full range of capabilities. Assumes responsibility for the appearance and completeness of documents produced and ensuring that reports are revised and formatted as requested.


JOB DUTIES

Formats technical reports to follow specific company report formatting guidelines for page layout, paragraph and font attributes, title pages, table of contents, lists of figures and tables, acronyms, headers and footers, indexes and glossaries. Prepares tables, figures, and graphics for inclusion in reports.

Revises lengthy technical reports according to editor’s and proofreader’s marks, symbols, and abbreviations.

Incorporates Microsoft Word’s advanced graphics, page design, and publishing tools, including the use of styles, tables of contents and indexes, and track-changes; utilizes form design and table features, and special fields and codes.

Works with Microsoft Excel for the creation and formatting of tables and charts.

Determines and follows consistent forms of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, hyphenation, and documentation (references and citations) according to widely accepted style guides for authors, editors, and proofreaders (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style) and provides guidance to others in these areas.

Converts files and data from one software package to another, from tables to text, and text to tables.

Maintains electronic and hard-copy document filing system, and searches and retrieves documents as needed, in some cases with limited information.

Troubleshoots software configuration problems and incompatibilities, and assists others with similar problems.

Prepares portable document format (PDF) files using Adobe Acrobat.

Ensures all work is backed up in a timely fashion, as needed.

Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.




EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school or General Educational Development (GED) graduate, plus microcomputer applications (word processing and spreadsheet) or business courses.

Minimum seven years of general office experience, including at least five years of experience with applicable word processing software, preferably within the company or within the engineering/environmental industry.

Must be skilled with Microsoft Windows operating system.

Familiarity with earth and life sciences (biology, ecology, geology, archaeology, etc.) and engineering terminology helpful.


SPECIAL SKILLS

Typing speed of at least 75 words per minute; excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills; skilled with basic and advanced features of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. WordPerfect, graphics, and database software knowledge also helpful.

Ability to determine work priorities and handle multiple reports simultaneously. Ability to follow directions and standard operating procedures for file organization and setup.

Expert ability to create/build templates and format reports.
