Technical Engineering Manager

Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) will provide technical management for licensing activities for Nuclear Power Plant project within a matrix organization.   

Location – Mississauga, ON

Your role within the Team:

Provide technical management of individuals and teams executing probabilistic safety assessments of plant systems especially in internal events, shutdown, internal fire, internal flood and seismic events as well as other external hazards. This includes:

  • Approving technical documents and deliverables prepared by staff working under them.  Such may include, but not limited to, reliability systems assessments (process and safety), especially for safety systems, risk monitor and generation risk assessments.
  • Planning and executing work consistent with quality, cost and schedule requirements.
  • Removing barriers that would impact deliverables to meet project requirements and priorities, working with the assigned staff to find solutions and optimizations.
  • Providing technical advice to staff and as appropriate subject matter expertise to staff and management.
  • Participating in the preparation of commercial proposals and approving the technical content of proposals under their direction related to the new build project.
  • Forecasting resource demands for the assigned work scope, including skills, capabilities, and durations. Interfacing with clients and successfully delivering engineering products in accordance with customer specification and requirements.
  • Working with marketing and other corporate groups to maintain and improve client relationships and offerings.
  • The Technical Manager will also oversee the work of 10 to 15 engineering staff.

Supervisory responsibilities include:

  • Fostering a positive team environment where good performance is recognized and celebrated.
  • Coaching for improved performance.
  • Performing administrative tasks, e.g., timesheet approvals, vacation approvals.

Supporting the Functional Management team (as requested) with:

  • Recruitment of new staff
  • Performance feedback and performance enhancement
  • Goal Setting

The ideal candidate:

  • 10+ years of licensing experience in a nuclear project environment, including experience leading engineering teams.
  • Excellent knowledge of the CANDU design, including both NSP (especially safety systems) and BOP.
  • Broad knowledge of system operation, plant response and understanding of underlying reliability principles.
  • Knowledge of PSA methodologies, codes and standards (e.g. Canadian, US, IAEA).
  • Able to work closely and effectively with the clients in a client/consultant relationship.
  • Proficient in CAFTA suite of computer codes, CFAST and/or RiskSpectrum an asset.
  • Proven leadership skills, as technical guidance to assist and supervise analysts with good communication skills.
  • Experience in licensing activities would also be an asset.
  • Understanding of light water reactor design and PSAs an asset.
  • Ability to work to budget and schedule. Must be willing to travel occasionally to participate in walkdowns, meetings and workshops.
  • Eligible for nuclear energy worker (NEW).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Additional, preferred qualifications:

  • Engineering degree in a related engineering discipline.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, qualified to seal engineering documents.
  • Experience managing and/or performing multidisciplinary work with significant interfacing requirements with interfacing disciplines such as licensing, safety analysis, mechanical, electrical/I&C, process control, and civil engineering.
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada, or Candu Reactors highly preferable.
  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet project needs (Note: the initial site location is at the Mississauga head office in Ontario).
