Technical Manager; Tooling Assembly

Reporting to the Candu Field Services Technical Director, the Technical Manager – Tooling Assembly will support various tooling assembly and test projects with expert tooling assembly staff, and will be responsible for the cohort technicians, technologists and trades assigned to tooling assembly, tooling refurbishment and field deployment.  This manager will establish a standard for high quality tooling assembly, performance testing and field deployment of those staff as required for site execution phases of work.  This manager shall drive a high level of performance for the technical staffing as related to the key skills required for nuclear tooling performance and operation, such as Human Performance, Quality Assurance and Quality Control Strategies, Foreign Material Exclusion practices, and Radiation Protection Strategies.

Your role within the team:

Technical management

  • Manages team to deliver high performance and high-quality nuclear tooling.
  • Ensures standardized processes are in place for nuclear tooling manufacturing, assembly, and performance testing
  • Supports PMs to ensure requirements for outage readiness are met as related to all CFS tooling programs
  • Supports PMs to ensure requirements for outage readiness are met as related to all CFS technical training
  • Ensures that the final deliverables from their team meet customer requirements specified in the contract and overall alignment with nuclear codes and standards.
  • Approves technical documents prepared by staff reporting to them.
  • Removes barriers that would impact deliverables to meet project requirements and priorities, working with the assigned staff to find solutions and optimizations.
  • Ensures that work is conducted in accordance with applicable Engineering and Quality Assurance procedures.

Resource management

  • Provide oversight for assigned work cells in both the clean and the rad work areas within the building, e.g. with respect to housekeeping, utilization, workflow and any infrastructure needs
  • Fosters a team environment and team building within technical group and with internal and external customers.
  • Creates a scheme to train inexperienced personnel in the requisite skills used for precision tool assembly and test, including mentorship of junior personnel under senior personnel.
  • Forecast resource demands for the assigned work scope, including skills, capabilities, and durations
  • Defines the structure of the group or their scope of accountability, including reporting relationships.
  • Ensures all training and qualifications records are up-to-date, and required training and qualifications are completed/updated on time.
  • Ensures that the CFS technician staff compliment is sized appropriately for the forecasted projects and services.
  • Performs all recruiting and disciplinary functions for the assigned team
  • Provides clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, recognizes and rewards achievements, and takes disciplinary steps when warranted.

The ideal Candidate:

  • Experienced technician, technologist or tradesman with 10 years of experience with nuclear tooling assembly and testing
  • College diploma or trades certification in electronics technology, mechanical engineering technology, mechatronics or similar.
  • 8 years of progressive nuclear experience in a discipline and field of application relevant to the work being managed, including experience leading technical teams.
  • An appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance Programs and their significance to the nuclear industry considered an asset.
  • Expert knowledge in the assembly, testing and operation of tooling for use in a nuclear environment
  • Working knowledge in the application of visual inspection, non-destructive examination and portable metrology instrumentation
  • Expert knowledge of operational practices for foreign material exclusion
  • Working knowledge of remote operation of tooling using remote instrumentation and control
  • Working knowledge of operation of fuel channel inspection systems deploying NDE instrumentation
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex and parallel technical projects.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills in the development of team members and support staff;
  • Strong communication (both verbal and written), and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent client focus and conflict resolution skills;
  • Three or more years of experience leading engineering teams
  • Experience working in a nuclear facility licensed in Canada.
  • Sound knowledge of multiple engineering fields and of nuclear technologies;
  • Willing to travel to and potentially work at Project sites to meet corporate needs.
