Assistant Engineer - Advanced Technology

The team embodies the Advanced Technology nature of D&AT, representing specialist areas that include structural dynamics, seismic analysis, blast and impact design, and thermal and fluid mechanics.  Focusing in advanced computer-based structural and dynamic analysis using Finite Element Analysis software, data analysis, coding and scripting, the team seeks to efficiently predict the behaviour of civil, structural and mechanical hardware. Whilst the team works across the core AtkinsRéalis markets most recent projects have centred in the Defence and Nuclear markets, including Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C Nuclear New build, Class 1 Nuclear structures on Devonport, AWE and HMNB Clyde, and Renewables (wind energy).  Based on the nature of work please refer to the Additional Information section with regards the applicability of the role.

The team is diversely located across the UK, with this role principally based in our Epsom office but with opportunities to work at our own and our client locations elsewhere in the UK and overseas. You will be able to work on a range of projects from those of strategic national importance such as the Nuclear New Build of Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, HS2, Renewables development and extension of offshore UK wind farms, and multiple Defence projects at the forefront of applied research.

What we are looking for:

  • Talented Engineers with a 2.2 or above MEng/MSc degree (or equivalent) in a Civil, Mechanical, General or related discipline.
  • Good written standard of English and oral communication abilities.
  • Ability to apply your technical knowledge to analyse problems and create innovative solutions.
  • Experience in developing the application of computer programming and other digital solutions to engineering problems.
  • Ambition, vision, enthusiasm and the drive to keep on developing your technical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills.
  • A flexible approach to travel as our projects and training may take you to a variety of locations in the UK and possibly abroad.

The role would join a body of technically focused engineers who aim to provide solutions to complex problems. There is a demand for an analytically focused, practically minded Engineer, with a Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or equivalent Engineering background who is looking for a challenge.

Successful applicants will join a forward-thinking team, working in a digitally collaborative environment, and will be given opportunities to make real contributions to major engineering projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Simulating structure and component behaviour using computational models.
  • Investigating dynamic characteristics through calculations.
  • Ensuring high quality output by following quality assurance procedures.
  • Writing of technical reports.
  • Coordinating with other engineers on multi-disciplinary projects, to understand analysis or design requirements, and explaining analysis results and their influence on other aspects of the project.
  • Build internal relationships and engage with clients and stakeholders.
  • Engaging with technical and digital networks within the organisation to share knowledge and best practice.
  • Maintain and promote high personal standards in Quality, Health, Safety and Wellbeing, Security and Environment.  

Requirements:

  • Strong academic background with a relevant Honours degree, degrees or equivalent.
  • Seeking Chartered Engineer Status (e.g., MICE, MIStructE or MIMechE).
  • Familiarity in the use of computer modelling packages such as finite element analysis (e.g. Abaqus and Ansys), finite difference analysis, or finite volume fluid dynamics packages.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • A flexible attitude to both the type of work undertaken and the level of responsibility given.

Desirable

  • Ideally be familiar with working to design codes, industry standards, and performance based design approaches appropriate for a safety critical industry.
  • Some design or site experience gained on a work placement.
  • Experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
