Principal Functional Safety Engineer

SNC-Lavalin Engineers & Constructions Inc. seeks a Principal Functional Safety Engineer: Develop Functional Safety and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) deliverables as per ISA 84 / IEC 61511, including Functional Safety Plans, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) studies, Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS), SIF Lists, Process Safety/SIF response time/SIL verification calculations, and Test plans. Lead Functional Safety Assessments (FSA), HAZOPS, and LOPA/SIL Assignment Review Meetings. Execute Process Safety portion of the project’s scope within budget and schedule and in accordance with the contract requirements. Lead all Process Safety activities. Oversee production of high-quality design documentation to industry and national standards for all Technical Safety deliverables, including Facility Siting Studies, Consequence Analysis, Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), Gas Dispersion Studies, Passive Fire Protection requirements, Fire Protection System designs, and Fire and Gas detection systems. Review and coordinate Design Hazard Management Plans, Fire and Explosion Hazard Management plans, Fire & Explosion Risk Assessment (FERA), Escape, Evacuation & Rescue Analysis (EERA), Emergency Systems Survivability Analysis (ESSA), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), Dropped Object Study (DOS), Temporary Refuge Impairment Assessment (TRIA), Design Case for Safety and Operations Case for Safety. Participate in Safety Study workshops. Review designs, 3D models, and Human Factors to ensure principles of Inherently Safe Design are incorporated at various stages of projects. Manage engineering workshare and third-party consultants’ work. Review and approve all Process Safety deliverables prior to release, resolving Client comments. Ensure customer requirements and expectations are identified and company is meeting customer expectations with regard to Technical Safety, Process Safety and Functional Safety. Maintain familiarity with the latest engineering codes and standards, including: API, NFPA, IEC, ISA, and ASME Boiler & Pressure Codes. Monitor new/changing regulations related to process safety, analyze potential impact, and assist projects and organization with developing strategies for implementation. Ensure that all design submissions produced by SNCL are compliant with all relevant standards. Prepare and deliver technical training programs related to Technical and Functional Safety.

Req's

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or foreign equivalent and 2 years experience in the job offered or related occupation. 2 years experience in safety programs for engineering projects in the petrochemical industry. 2 years experience in HAZOP, LOPA, and SIS evaluation. 2 years experience in application of relevant safety standards, codes and practices, in particular relevant PSM, API, NFPA, IEC, ISA and ASME provisions. Domestic and international travel req’d approx. 10% of time.
