Role Designation: Senior Engineer - Structures

AtkinsRéalis’ Global Technology Centre (GTC) Transportation Business is looking to appoint a Structural Engineering role to support the Rolling Stock Rail Consulting business across a wide range of rail vehicle projects.

As a Senior Engineer working within the Rolling Stock Design and Analysis Sub-Practice, you will be based in Bangalore and report into the Structures Service Area Lead based in Derby, UK.

You will work closely with our design engineers, other specialist engineers and your fellow structural engineers to deliver structural assessments for industry-leading projects. Using your experience as a structural engineer, you will be responsible for the delivery of packages of work contributing to larger multi-disciplinary projects as well as standalone small and medium sized projects. This will involve developing methodologies for bidding as well as executing structural assessments to verify compliance to UK and European design standards.

This key post will be based in Bangalore where we have thriving Atkins offices, which serve all AtkinsRéalis regions across the world. Our portfolio of work continues to grow, and we will offer a challenging and rewarding opportunity to apply knowledge, experience, and problem-solving skills.

Core Role Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Understand client requirements and aspirations to identify and agree scopes of work covering structural assessments.
  • Deliver high quality structural assessments, using hand calculations and Finite Element methods, to agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Deliver high quality technical reports to clients while meeting client deadlines.

Have good knowledge of structural analysis which could be applied to:

  • Bogies and suspension.
  • Carbodies/Bodyshells.
  • Wheelsets.
  • Attached equipment.
  • Manage resource, work packages, budgets, project and commercial risks for the successful delivery of your own projects.
  • Manage the technical requirements of several projects simultaneously.
  • Provide impartial review to other structural projects as an independent checker, helping to ensure a consistent and high level of quality across all the work that we deliver.
  • Create, manage, and maintain effective cross-functional, interdepartmental relationships to ensure the organisation delivers the most cost-effective service to customers.
  • Support our Structures Service Area Lead based in UK in the delivery of a wide portfolio of projects.

Core Role Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • You will have a sound understanding of structural engineering principles and experience in the application of these principles to real-world engineering problems and be able to select and use the most appropriate method to reach an optimal solution.
  • You will be experienced in the delivery of structural assessments for railway (rolling stock) or similar mechanical engineering design projects including the ability to understand problems in order to define boundary conditions and required mesh quality, the development of Finite Element (FE) models to assess compliance to design standards, and the ability to produce detailed reports outlining the methodology, results, conclusions and recommendations for improvement.
  • You will be qualified with, as a minimum, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
    You will be a Chartered Engineer (or be working towards attaining Chartership status) [MG1] with minimum industry experience of 10+ years.
  • You will be proficient in using ANSYS Workbench or Altair Hyper Works which are our key FE packages.
  • Creation of presentations for both internal teams and clients. 

Beneficial Role Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Due to the diverse nature of our customer base some experience in Nastran/Pastran would be beneficial.
  • Experience in Crashworthiness, Fracture Mechanics, and Rolling Stock Approvals would be advantageous.
  • To support the commercial and win-work function, experience in developing convincing bids by producing cost estimates and project timescales would be beneficial
    Experience of project management including risk mitigation and project/financial planning including monthly reporting.
  • Knowledge of the risks associated with each aspect in the lifecycle of a design; from initial concept through to manufacturing and installation would be beneficial; covering bidding, concept, and detail design, rolling stock approvals, material procurement and installation, maintenance and warranty is a key advantage.

  • The ability and willingness to participate in the rigorous peer-review process which is in place to ensure that work delivered to customers is of high and consistent quality.
    Energetic and enthusiastic, with the desire to take on extra responsibilities and constantly upskilling team and oneself.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication within a business environment.
    Ability to exercise initiative, take ownership of project issues and work independently with excellent time management skills.
  • You will demonstrate a high level of commitment, flexibility to work outside of a rigidly defined role and be eager to accept responsibility and learn new skills.
    The ability to offer technical support to team members, and the willingness to seek such support when required.
  • You will act with integrity and professionalism, gaining the trust of colleagues and setting an example to junior staff.

Example Work Activities:

The role does not necessarily require applicants with experience in these areas. They are provided as examples of what you could be doing with us:

  • Structural analysis of new rolling stock against current design standards.
  • Structural analysis of retrospective modifications to existing rolling stock against design standards in place at the time of build.
  • Third party review of client’s work, approach and methodology to solving structural issues.
    The introduction of new rolling stock through design scrutiny in support of the Certification Body.
  • Investigation of in-service issues / problem solving.
  • Devising practical repair solutions.
  • Undertake Project Manager role for projects managed by the Structures team; and
    Identify technical, commercial and safety risks associated with projects and ensure these are managed through each project phase.
