An exciting opportunity in Atkins is available for a passionate and motivated Sustainability and Building Physics Consultant to develop our Sustainability Design team. Working under the guidance of our Director in Middle East, you will be collaborating with our existing Sustainable Design team based in United Arab Emirates to develop a local UAE and eventually MENA offering, building on your specialised technical knowledge whilst working on the design of some of the most exciting projects in the GCC and internationally.  The position is ideal for the suitable individual to work with a new and exciting sustainability team for the MENA market through pro-active engagement with Atkin’s global offices and clients as well as developing new relationships in the region.

The Role

Working under the guidance and supervision of the Atkins Sustainability Design Manager, you will develop your existing knowledge and skills in energy modelling and assist with the development of energy and sustainability strategies for new build and existing buildings. Over time you will be supported and encouraged to work towards Chartership, through one of our accredited training schemes.

The role will include supporting and developing some of our key work streams:

  • Building physics and parametric modelling

  • Design for performance, predictive energy modelling and operational energy assessments.

  • Planning and Building Regulations.

  • Bespoke sustainability services.

You will be expected to support Atkin’s Net Zero aspirations.

The main objective of the role will be to establish and expand our Sustainability & Building Physics capability within MENA. You will be supported both by our team in UAE and the allocated XX. There will be a strong emphasis on business development and industry leadership and you will be required to quickly assimilate the innovative services we have developed so that you can use these to promote our services and wider Atkins capacity in the local market. We are resourced as a single team with workload shared across offices to provide commercial security and support recruitment.

Working closely with colleagues of various disciplines, you will design, analyse, report and document Sustainability & Building Physics projects as well as present to clients. You will work across a variety of sectors and will have the opportunity over time to assume greater levels of responsibility and autonomy as we support the development of your professional skills.

You will be responsible for client management and project delivery for our key work streams:

  • Building physics and parametric model services.

  • Building performance and operational energy optimisation.

  • Sustainability certification and compliance.

  • Net zero carbon services.

  • Sustainability design services.

An understanding of financial and resource management is critical.

The Skills

You will, generally:

  • Be Educated to Masters level in Engineering or Built Environment and having gained relevant practical experience in a similar role, you have demonstrable knowledge and experience of building physics, particularly in relation to heat transfer, energy, comfort criteria, ASHRAE Guidance and other industry standards (CIBSE beneficial).

  • Have demonstrable knowledge and experience of multiple-asset project sustainability and building physics, particularly in relation to thermal comfort, passive design, compliance modelling and real operational energy assessments.

  • Have in depth-knowledge of dynamic simulation software’s and the UAE and KSA Building Regulations, including an understanding of climate-based daylighting analysis, operational energy calculation and life cycle carbon costing is highly desirable.

  • Given the collaborative and client focussed nature of this role, effective communication skills and some experience of using your initiative to overcome challenges are essential.

  • Proven experience within a similar role dealing with Sustainability strategies, Energy strategies, IES, Energy modelling and assessment.

You will be, specifically:

  • Leading and be responsible for the delivery of Sustainable Design and Building Physics projects including but not limited to thermal, daylight and glare control.

  • Producing dynamic thermal models using IES VE software.

  • Producing PART L & EPC reports, Thermal Comfort Reports, daylight analysis, LZC reports, etc.

  • Acting as Task Leader on selected projects.

  • Working as part of a larger team on certain projects.

  • Contributing towards raising & promoting the level of technical excellence.

  • Helping generate repeat business through customer care of existing clients.

  • Working closely with others in a team environment to achieve a common goal.

  • Reviewing progress, inc. reporting any anomalies and changes of scope to the line manager.

  • Deploying mentoring and training exercises of assigned junior staff.

  • Undertaking and overseeing:

    • Dynamic modelling for thermal comfort assessments and overheating risk assessments.

    • Renewable energy feasibility studies.

    • Embodied carbon assessments – not essential but beneficial.

    • Whole life carbon appraisals – not essential but beneficial.

    • Circular economy strategies and low carbon materials – not essential but beneficial

  • Preparing and reviewing energy and sustainability strategy and technical reports.

  • LEED AP accredited with experience on LEED v4 projects in the last 2 years. BREEAM, WELL AP – not essential but beneficial.

  • Interested in becoming a CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor.

  • Capable of accurate work under pressure and able to work on several projects simultaneously.

  • Interested in developing design tools to enable more efficient and accurate production of project deliverables.

  • Providing consultancy services to assist our clients on the journey and eventual realisation of Net-Zero carbon buildings, including the provision of sustainable design strategies and input to business cases.

  • Being the lead representative on projects, including site meetings, design workshops, site inspections and liaising with relevant stakeholders to meet client and project requirements

Qualifications

  • A degree qualification in an Engineering subject

  • 5 to 10 years’ experience working within the Building Physics / ESD / Sustainability sector, preferably within a consulting environment.

  • Experience in energy and parametric modelling.

  • Certified in LEED BD+C as AP with LEED v4.0 experience.

  • Certified (or desire to become certified) in LEED and net-zero design.

  • Experience of IES modelling from concept to completion of building projects.

  • Technical background in building services with a forward-thinking technical approach to sustainable design across both embodied and operational carbon, based in fundamental engineering knowledge.

  • Experience of sustainability certification schemes (e.g. LEED/WELL/BREEAM).

  • Experience in consulting, delivery and implementation of carbon and project sustainability strategies.

  • Self-motivated, dedicated, and proactive with a passion for detail.

  • Demonstrated excellence in providing high-quality client service.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Ability to generate new work from new and existing clients.

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workflow.
