Systems Engineer (Canada Line)

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our Engineering Team for maintaining and operating the Canada Line Light Rail system. Reporting to he Manager of Asset Management, the Systems Engineer is responsible for the complete lifecycle maintenance plans for assigned assets, including ownership and accountability for all maintenance plan documentation as well as acting as the primary facilitator or key stakeholder for any significant asset related projects.  Additionally, the role is responsible for providing internal engineering and technical support services for issues pertaining to the assigned assets.

The assigned asset mandate is determined based on organizational needs as well as individual experience and expertise, and may include:

  • AC & DC Power Supply and Distribution System

    • High Voltage Equipment

    • Traction Power Equipment

    • Low Voltage Equipment

    • Standby Generators

    • Blue Light Station System

  • Guideway & Tunnel Lighting

  • Facility Lighting

  • Digital Twin

  • Others as required

Location: Richmond, BC (Onsite Work)

Your role within the team:
This role has significant oversight associated with scheduling and planning safe work.  The incumbent is expected to follow Company Policy relative to all matters pertaining to the safety and ensure that Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) are established, deployed and followed prior to executing any tasks or work. Safety Leadership is expected in this role.

This role has no Significant Environmental Aspects associated with it but the incumbent is expected to follow Company Policy relative to all matters pertaining to the environment.

The Systems Engineer reports to the Manager of Asset Management and will work closely with the Maintenance Managers, Supervisors, and other internal stakeholders in supporting the regular Preventive Maintenance planning, Corrective Maintenance troubleshooting and Major Maintenance activity requirements for assigned assets. 

Duties and Essential Functions include, 

  • Manage, plan, schedule and execute Major Maintenance activities for assigned assets.

  • Maintain Asset Management Plans to ensure that documentation is accurate, contemporary, and modified to reflect updates and refurbishment as part of maintaining design configuration change management. 

  • Identify and champion initiatives to optimize the Asset Maintenance Plans in an effort to optimize Life Cycle Costs (LCCs) for assigned assets.  In doing so, a clear understanding of failure modes, consequences and contingency plans will be maintained for the assigned assets.

  • Assist with the development of the Canada Line Annual and Five-Year maintenance plans.

  • Act as the primary facilitator for engineering projects relating to assigned assets, including system improvements, refurbishment, capital asset replacement, etc. This will include project planning, conducting financial and technical feasibility studies, evaluating options, liaising with procurement, maintenance and external contractors, and making recommendations for implementing work. 

  • Manage configuration control of assigned systems and monitor compliance with the appropriate procedures, including the implementation of software upgrades. Ensure rigorous change management procedures are followed.

  • Collaborate with all stakeholders to resolve technical issues, project issues using sound project and engineering practices. 

  • Set the roadmap for the assigned assets for development, integration and testing in the Digital Twin for optimization of Major Maintenance. Use the AI and Machine Learning to optimize the asset LCC and to minimize cost of asset ownership.

  • Provide engineering and technical support to internal stakeholders for issues pertaining to assigned assets to ensure the successful day-to-day and long-term operation and maintenance of Canada Line operating systems.  These support activities will include such duties as inspection, analysis, troubleshooting, reporting, and making recommendations for appropriate engineering changes where necessary.  Review for adequacy the Preventive and Corrective maintenance schedules and activities required to maintain the assigned assets.  

  • Develop specifications, statements of work and potential contractors to support project work outside the organization’s capability.  Assist in establishing and managing contracts as required.

  • Investigate and review industry developments and recommend application to the Canada Line system as appropriate. Support business case development and manage the implementation of best practice and new technology.

  • Gather system data and compile reports as required to meet contractual obligations, regulatory requirements, and other internal requirements as required.

  • Assist with the maintenance of the document library site to make it a valuable and useable tool for engineering and maintenance staff. Organize, review, maintain and make accessible engineering documentation.

  • Act as in-house technical expert on assigned asset mandate. Seek outside expertise on behalf of the Company as required.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Expected compensation for this role is between Pay Range $64,700 - $89,000 annually. Base salaries are determined according to several parameters like skills, experience, and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into account in our offers.

The ideal candidate: 

  • Engineering Degree and registration, or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia.

  • Experience working on large transportation operations and maintenance projects is preferred.

  • Project Management experience with Professional designation is an asset.

  • A combination of education and experience may also be considered.

  • Ideal candidate would have an Electrical Engineering degree.

  • Experience in an asset management and/or maintenance role.

  • Experience in project management.

  • Current BC driver’s license is an asset. 

Required – 

  • Engineering experience in a field relevant to the assigned asset mandate.

  • Experience and skills in using computerized systems and current software used in the Engineering field.

  • Organized and methodical approach to problem solving with strong analytical skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong technical writing skills.
