Day in the Life of Kate Hillman, senior structural engineer and RedR champion
Kate Hillman is a senior structural engineer in the civil engineering & advanced technology practice. As well as working on the Hinkley Point C project, she is also a RedR Champion, which allows her to develop her interest in engineering for sustainable development and disaster relief while building closer ties between the company and RedR.

My alarm goes off….
And then I hit snooze at least twice. I live quite close to Epsom so it’s a short journey to my desk.
I’m responsible for….
In my day job, I’m assistant technical lead for the classified buildings on Hinkley Point C (HPC), as well as building lead for the HPC pumping station, so I manage the day-to-day running of our team and the deliverables we’re producing.
As a RedR champion, I’m a link between AtkinsRéalis, and the disaster relief charity RedR. I try to promote RedR across the company and educate our staff about the fantastic work RedR does. I also help RedR with fundraising events and other external events when I can.
I became a RedR Champion by…
I’ve always had an interest in international development and disaster relief so have been helping with RedR activities for a few years. When the previous Infrastructure RedR Champion went on sabbatical last September to work with Engineers Without Borders in Kenya, I took over the role.
My typical day…
Typically, my RedR duties are on an ad-hoc basis. Earlier in the month I organised a CPD (Continuing Personal Development) event. This is RedR’s main fundraising event for the year and there’s always a lot of involvement from companies across the industry, which means it can be quite a competitive event! RedR give awards for the best Red outfit, the most inventive fundraising ideas and there is a leader board of company fundraising.
